A while ago, reports emerged that the former NBA Star and two-time champion was arrested on Tuesday, September 29, 2026. According to Hunt County jail records obtained by TMZ, Smith was booked on a charge of assault causing bodily injury and family violence.
J.R. Smith’s arrest has now shifted the focus to his personal life. For those unaware, he had an affair with The Flash actress Candice Patton while he was still married.
It was J.R. Smith’s wife, Jewel Harris, who first accused the NBA Star of having an affair in 2019. In an Instagram video, which was nearly 10 minutes long, she got emotional while saying a prayer while sitting in a car. After she finished praying for herself, Jewel asked God to forgive Smith and his mistress, Candice. It is worth mentioning that Jewel did not reveal the woman's last name. She said:
“My husband, he’s hurting, and Candice, Lord Father God, she’s hurting…For her to go out here, Lord Father God, and seek a married man, Father God, I just pray that you give her grace and mercy through all of this. I lift her up.”
In the clips, Jewel could also be heard saying that she wants God to help and heal her husband. She asked God to forgive Smith and Candice since they “didn't know the path of destruction that is before them.” Near the end of her prayer, Jewel could not hold in her tears and thanked God for giving her the strength through what was meant to “break me down.” She said:
“I pray for my enemies. Anybody who has come against my marriage or tried to attack my marriage and has put their hand on my marriage.”
Soon, J.R. Smith responded to his wife's cheating allegations. Taking to his Instagram Story, he claimed that he and Jewel had already been separated for months. He added:
“IG ain't a place for relationships, but God told me to tell y’all I’ve been separated for months. He doesn’t understand why his child failed to mention that… #that's all.”
J.R. Smith and Jewel Harris tied the knot in April 2016. According to reports, they are still legally married despite his claims that they have separated. Additionally, years after his wife exposed his affair with Candice, who was later revealed as Flash actress Candice Patton, the pair welcomed a child in 2024.
It was the actress who first shared the news on Instagram alongside photos of the baby boy’s feet and a heavily tattooed person holding him. In the caption, she wrote, “Son in Virgo. Born at home. Heart now beats outside of my chest. In love forever.”
Although she did not disclose who the baby’s father was, the very next day J.R. Smith shared a joint post on IG that features a series of pictures of his newborn with his face covered by emojis. Fans were shocked that the former NBA star welcomed a child while he was still legally married to his wife, Jewel, as many pointed out in his comments section, “That's not his wife?!”
J.R. Smith was reportedly arrested on September 29, 2026. The arrest took place in Texas, and he was charged with family violence. As of now, reports reveal that he is still in Hunt County Detention Center. Jail records also show that no bail has been set for him yet.
