The anchor, who has been with NBC Washington and the local Telemundo station, also revealed that he was switching careers in broadcast journalism after 10 years. The viewers were confused about Olmo’s sudden announcement. Amid Olmo’s departure, let's look at the estimated salary he earned as a journalist.
Raised in Annapolis, Maryland, Olmo began his career as a freelance reporter for several local and Hispanic news operations. He then moved to WDVM-TV in Hagerstown in 2020. Before joining NBC4 Washington, Olmo covered transportation for DC News Now. He was also a part of NBC4’s sister station Telemundo 44.
Olmo, a proud member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, has nearly a decade of experience in the newsroom. According to reports, Olmo earns an estimated annual salary of USD 47,000 to USD 120,000. The reports also estimated Olmo’s net worth, which reportedly ranges from USD 1 million to USD 7 million.
Olmo announced his departure on air while concluding Sunday’s program. He revealed that he was breaking 'one more story' for his viewers. He also reflected on his career at NBC4 and said:
“For the better part of a decade, which includes three thrilling years right here at NBC 4, I have had one remarkable job. You can cover the world, but nothing compares to being a local news reporter. Because think about it. Who else would tell you about all the things happening where we live?" After almost 10 years in broadcasting, tomorrow night I will hit the streets of the DMV one final time as a local news reporter.”
Olmo plans to switch careers, as he once revealed that he has more than one dream in life. Olmo did not reveal what he plans to do next, but said people who know him “will not be surprised." The anchor gave a hint about switching his career as he said:
“I firmly believe our time here is way too short to get to the end and wonder – what if I had tried that?”
After Olmo’s announcement, many of his social media followers guessed that Olmo is planning to become a pilot, as he often posts about planes and airlines. But Olmo hasn’t confirmed it yet. However, after his live on Sunday, Olmo’s Instagram post announcing the move was flooded with well wishes from viewers and colleagues.
Olmo has always been passionate about a career in journalism and wanted to be an anchor ever since he was a child. He once told Catholic Herald that as a child, he often grabbed a pen and stood in the living room in front of a mirror while reading the news of the day. That childhood impulse pushed him to grab the opportunity and step into journalism.
In March of 2018, Olmo made his dreams a reality when he began contributing to the crowdsourced, volunteer journalism outlet The Arundel Patriot. He later networked with other local journalists and began freelancing for the Spanish-language Central America TV (CATV) network. While studying media and communication studies at The Catholic University of America, Olmo also balanced his studies with full-time anchoring duties and freelance journalism.
