Simon referred to a voice recording of their conversation and said that Jason was mentally exhausted by the constant scrutiny of his academic career. As per him, Jason was unable to cope with the loss of his career and reputation. Quoting his deceased friend, he recalled him saying, "he couldn't go on" anymore. Simon's exact words were:

"He was being subjected to relentless scrutiny, including ridicule, discrediting absolutely every detail of his life, and he wasn't coping with the loss of his career, the loss of his reputation, and he felt he couldn't go on. He used those words in voice notes."

According to Sir Simon Baron-Cohen, Jason was being ridiculed by everyone around him over accusations that were still unproven. He also recalled Jason being a 'kind and gentle' man who had been 'bombarded by every media outlet'. He was used as a 'lightning rod' to examine diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies. Simon further stated that Jason should have been treated with more empathy due to his troubled childhood marked by disabilities like autism. Simon said:

"He was a vulnerable child, a vulnerable teenager, and a vulnerable adult, so he needed and deserved safeguarding and support and reasonable adjustment every step of the way. It's a tragedy on so many levels, but particularly just for everybody who knew Jason, his family obviously, his friends. We think of think of them today. It's not a moment for any rushing to judgment. It's a moment for reflection, I would say, reflecting on how how things came to this."

More about Jason Arday's academic controversy

Jason Arday's controversy first erupted after an academic self-defined "race realist," Nathan Cofnas, who was sacked from his Cambridge role in 2024, said he found numerous instances of plagiarism in the professor's work. According to reports, Cambridge initially said that claims of plagiarism regarding Jason Arday's thesis and some journal publications were being investigated by Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) and the journals in question.

After that, LJMU, the university that awarded Jason his PhD in 2015, concluded that he had not plagiarised. However, despite the conclusion, Cambridge later announced that it would also conduct an independent investigation into his appointment. The announcement asserted that the investigation would be conducted by senior academics from within and outside the university. The scandal drew immense criticism of Jason, which was too much for him to bear and might have led to his demise.
