The livestream was operated by the nonprofit organization Friends of Big Bear Valley and captured Jackie's life with her mate, Shadow.
The couple grabbed the internet's attention and soon started garnering hundreds of millions of views worldwide. However, now with her death, Jackie's fans are left heartbroken. So, let's take a close look at what caused the magnificent bird's death.
Jackie, the famous bald eagle from Big Bear Lake, California, died in the early hours of Monday, August 10, 2026 (ET) morning at age 14. According to reports, she passed away at the Ojai Raptor Center, where she was kept in intensive care for the past three weeks. For the unversed, Jackie was rescued on July 18, 2026 (ET). The post read:
"It is with profound sadness that we share that Patient 26-519 passed away in the early hours of this morning, following more than three weeks of intensive medical care. Over the past several days, her condition continued to deteriorate despite intensive treatment and the combined efforts of our veterinary team and consulting specialists."
The centre said her condition continued to worsen despite oxygen therapy, supportive treatment, round-the-clock monitoring and consultations with specialists. In a post on Instagram, Ojai Raptor Center revealed that throughout her time at the center, decisions about her health were taken keeping her well-being and best interests at heart. The post read:
"She remained critically ill, receiving oxygen therapy, supportive treatment, and around-the-clock monitoring in our intensive care unit. Throughout her time at Ojai Raptor Center, every decision was guided by the available medical evidence, her welfare, and our responsibility to do what was in her best interest."
According to reports, Jackie was rescued on July 18, 2026 (ET) after she was found weak, underweight, disheveled, and unable to fly on the north shore of Big Bear Lake. For the unversed, the bald eagle got in a fight with two younger eagles. However, her caregiver revealed that while the encounter may have left her unable to fly, it didn't appear to be the cause of her underlying illness.
Jackie showed signs that she had been sick for some time, and veterinarians found that she had severe anemia and inflammation affecting her kidneys. Jackie even received a life-saving blood transfusion from Spirit, another female bald eagle who resides at CALM Zoo in Bakersfield, along with other supportive treatment. However, nothing could eventually save her life.
Extensive testing ruled out several possible causes, including lead poisoning, cancer, and metal objects. Despite treatment, the exact cause of her illness remained unknown. According to reports, Jackie's remains have been transferred to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and Ojai Raptor Center has revealed that they "will provide a more comprehensive statement including additional information on her treatments and test results." The post added:
"We know this news will be deeply felt by the many thousands of people around the world who have followed her journey, hoped alongside us, prayed for her, and supported the people caring for her. Our team is heartbroken. It has been an extraordinary privilege to care for her."
