The post, which included a black-and-white picture of Jackie Chan, was styled as an obituary. It included the text "1954-2026" and the words "he passed away" in the caption.
The post, shared on X (formerly Twitter), quickly drew netizen and media attention, leading to millions of views and tons of reposts. Notably, a quick fact-check debunked the contents as fake. The recent death hoax was one of many the actor has faced since reaching middle age. He once shut down the rumors with his signature wit and humour.
Jackie Chan is known for his healthy and disciplined lifestyle. At 72, he is fitter than many people half his age or even younger. Naturally, news of his sudden death sent shockwaves among his well-wishers. The Karate Kid star was subject to a death hoax in 2013, as an "R.I.P. Jackie Chan" page was created on Facebook. The page even shared false details regarding the time he left the world and added:
"At about 11 am on Wednesday, our beloved actor Jackie Chan passed away. Jackie Chan was born on April 7, 1954, in Hong Kong. He will be missed but not forgotten."
What made it more bizarre was that the page's creator urged fans to share the news, which rapidly increased the hoax's reach. The fake post circulated widely online, and media outlets like Global Associated News fell for the hoax. After that, the actor had to intervene and prove he was alive.
Jackie Chan hit back at the death rumors, but with grace and dignity. His representative issued a statement on his behalf; however, it didn't put the speculation to rest. After that, the actor posted a recent photo of himself on his Facebook page to prove that he was alive. He also updated his fans about his whereabouts, sharing that he had taken an early-morning flight from India to Beijing.
Jackie added that his schedule was so packed he didn't have time to clean his house or even sleep. He then addressed the unverified social media chatter regarding him. The actor shared that it confused his close friends about what was actually going on with him.
Jackie shared that someone called to congratulate him on his engagement after seeing a fake post about it, and the very next day, another caller asked the actor if he was still alive. In his words:
"Hi everybody! Yesterday, I got on a 3 am flight from India to Beijing. I didn't get a chance to sleep and even had to clean my house when I got home. Today, everybody called to congratulate me on my rumoured engagement. Afterward, everybody called me to see if I was alive."
Jackie gave a befitting response to the fake RIP post, mentioning that if he had actually passed away, his team would be the first to confirm it officially- and not random posts on social media. He thanked everyone for worrying about him and trying to check on him. He then ended the statement by expressing his love for his well-wishers. The Chinese star's exact words were:
"If I died, I would probably tell the world! I took a photo with today's date, just in case you don't believe me! However, thank you all for your concern. Kiss kiss and love you all!"
