She is already a mother to her two children, a son named Aleph and a daughter named Amalia, whom she shares with her ex-husband, Benjamin Millepied.
In an interview, Natalie shared that this was probably her last pregnancy experience. Amid this, people have shown interest in knowing what went wrong in Natalie and Benjamin’s 12-year marriage.
Natalie Portman and Benjamin Millepied first crossed paths on the set of Black Swan. While Natalie signed on for a starring role in the film in 2009, Benjamin was hired to choreograph the movie. It was Natalie who began to fall for Benjamin as he taught her to dance. She shared that the moment was like living in a dreamland. In an interview with SiriusXM Town Hall, Natalie said:
"I met my husband on it, so I think I was in, like, dreamland … We had a whole, like, he was teaching me to dance. You know, one of those romantic stories … It was definitely exciting and fun. It was beautiful. I don't know about instant. It was like I really got to know him, and that was when it seemed like, 'Oh, this is the person.'"
After one year of dating, the ex-pair announced their engagement and pregnancy in December 2010. Back then, Natalie’s reps confirmed to PEOPLE that the Star Wars actress and Benjamin were engaged and expecting their first child. While the duo kept their engagement and pregnancy news under wraps, jewelry designer Jamie Wolf later told PEOPLE that Benjamin was very thoughtful and planned the engagement accordingly. He said:
"Ben was exceptionally thoughtful and dedicated and patient to make sure we had everything right. We wanted everything about the ring to speak to things that are important to Natalie."
Later, Natalie expressed her excitement about her engagement and pregnancy. She shared that although she had always kept her personal life private, she wanted to express that she was "indescribably happy and feel very grateful to have this experience." On June 14, 2011, the duo welcomed their first child, son, Aleph. A year later, on August 4, 2012, the two tied the knot. In late 2014, the ex-couple and their son, Aleph, relocated to Paris after Benjamin accepted a job as the director of the Paris Opera Ballet.
In 2016, they returned to the US. In the same year, in September 2016, the ex-couple announced they were expecting their second child. On February 22, 2017, they welcomed their daughter, Amalia. Everything was going well until May 2023. At that time, reports surfaced claiming that Benjamin was having an extramarital affair. In June 2023, a source told PEOPLE that Benjamin is trying to get Natalie to forgive him. The source said:
"It was short-lived, and it is over. He knows he made an enormous mistake and he is doing all he can to get Natalie to forgive him and keep their family together. Natalie is incredibly private and has no intention of playing this out in the media. Her biggest priority is protecting her children and their privacy."
According to reports, Natalie filed for divorce from Benjamin in July 2023. Seven months later, the divorce was finalized in France. At the time, a friend of the duo told PEOPLE, "Natalie's biggest priority has been ensuring a smooth transition for her children. She and Ben really love their kids and are equally focused on being the best co-parents they can be. Nothing is more important."
Natalie reportedly took help from a professional divorce coach to cope with the situation. Sources revealed that Benjamin deeply regretted his suspected affair and wanted Natalie to forgive him. He allegedly wanted to save their marriage and keep their family together.
