Within hours, still images from the video began circulating on social media. However, alongside the original footage, new images emerged showing what appeared to be the same agent unmasked. Nonetheless, it was later revealed that the images were generated using Gork, a generative AI chatbot developed by xAI.
Once the AI-generated images spread online, they were soon tagged with the name 'Steve Grove'. According to NPR, although the leak's origin has not yet been confirmed, it has caused real-world harm, as at least two individuals have reported receiving threats. A gun shop owner from Springfield, Missouri, named Steve Grove woke up to find his Facebook page filled with angry messages. Following the harassment, the man told Springfield Daily Citizen that, "I never go by 'Steve,' and then, of course, I'm not in Minnesota. I don't work for ICE, and I have 20 inches of hair on my head."
Another Steve Grove, who is the publisher of the Minnesota Star Tribune, was also linked to the shooting. The newspaper later revealed that it was monitoring what it believed to be a coordinated online disinformation campaign and urged readers to rely on reporting from trained journalists rather than bots.
According to NPR, the Minnesota Star Tribune, and other outlets, the ICE agent involved was identified as Jonathan Ross, based on court documents and official records. Those records show Ross was previously involved in a separate incident in June 2025 in Bloomington, Minnesota, during which he was dragged by a car during a traffic stop. Several politicians and former agents have backed Ross, stating that it could be a trauma response to his previous encounter that triggered the shooting.
