She claimed that she had been “absolutely brainwashed” by the late Playboy founder and detailed their restrictive lifestyle. Amid this, her previous statements when she spoke about cheating on Hugh, who was 60 years her senior, have resurfaced.
In her memoir, Only Say Good Things, Crystal Hefner opened up about her life with her late husband, Hugh Hefner. She revealed that even though they tied the knot on New Year's Eve in 2012, Hugh would almost always prefer to engage in group sex with other women. However, as he got older and more frail, Crystal ended up as more of a caretaker and nurse to him, rather than his wife or lover. This was especially true in the years before his death at 91 from a superbug infection in September 2017.
Crystal admitted that the sex between them “stopped altogether” in 2014, leaving her feeling “relieved.” After keeping up with what she described as “the Playboy charade” year after year, she was glad that “there was no more going out, no more bringing girls home, no more performances.”
This was around the same time that Crystal came to know a “struggling jazz musician.” She referred to this man as Diego and refrained from revealing his last name. Speaking about their relationship, Crystal said, “We became friends quickly. And then…we became more than friends.”
For those unaware, Crystal first started dating Hugh Hefner when she was just 21 years old. So when it came to being with Diego, she confessed that it “felt like oxygen after being underwater for a million years.” Since Crystal was still married to Hugh when her relationship with Diego blossomed, she always had to return to the Playboy Mansion. Hugh would reportedly keep looking at the clock and shout at staff if she ever returned late.
At this point, the only intimacy that was left between Crystal and Hugh was when she either kissed his cheek or held his hand. As Hugh approached his death, he would need help with daily tasks like eating his meals and going to the bathroom. Crystal said that he was “wobbly on his feet” and “visibly frail.”
She revealed that Hugh began talking more and more about death and even expressed his wish to be buried in a crypt that he had bought next to Marilyn Monroe’s grave in Westwood Cemetery in LA. Eventually, just a month before the Playboy founder passed away, Crystal informed him in August 2017 that she was going on what she claimed was her first real vacation in 10 years without him. Although Hugh did not want her to leave, she assured him by saying that she'd come back in one week.
Crystal admitted that she flew to the Cook Islands, which are located in the middle of the Pacific, with Diego. According to her, their vacation was “romantic, and sexy, and fun, and adventurous.” Crystal had also revealed that at that time, Diego made her “feel young again.” When she returned home, she soon realized that there was something wrong with the publishing magnate, and before long, Hugh passed away.
During her recent appearance on the No One Asked Her podcast, Crystal claimed that she felt as if she was simply brainwashed during her marriage to the Playboy founder. She thought that she was crazy as the media kept putting Hugh on a pedestal. In her words:
"I think I was absolutely brainwashed, but there was nothing out there that validated me. So, I just thought I was the crazy one because all of the media put Hef on such a pedestal that I'm like, 'OK, if they all see him as this larger-than-life amazing human, there must be something wrong with me."
