In the third season of House of the Dragon, ‘Aemond Targaryen’ arrives at Harrenhal. He intends to display his power and skips any attempt at diplomacy or real discussion with House Strong. After cutting down the castle guards, he discovers ‘Ser Simon Strong’ and his two grandsons. He wants to know where ‘Daemon Targaryen’ is and learns that ‘Daemon’ has left.

While ‘Aemond’ challenges ‘Simon’ for a duel, the latter unfortunately does not have anything for his defense. He tells ‘Aemond’ that he has no desire to fight him. ‘Aemond’ still does not stop and kills ‘Simon’ with a blade to his abdomen. He even kills ‘Simon’s’ grandsons, following which he suffers an injury and falls on the ground.

‘Daemon Targaryen’ kills the Guards of the Red Keep

‘Daemon Targaryen’ finds that ‘Jace’ has died and that ‘Rhaenyra’ needs him back by her side. He then tries to convince his wife that they must strike King’s Landing. ‘Aemond’ and ‘Vhagar’ are not in the city anymore, and this is the best chance to reclaim the Iron Throne. ‘Alicent Hightower’ is prepared for their approach, while ‘Rhaenyra’s’ right to rule is eventually rejected.

This leads to a few deaths as ‘Daemon’ clears a path to the throne room of ‘Rhaenyra’. The duo moves into the Red Keep and through the fortress when ‘Daemon’ kills multiple guards that stand in their way. He is spared from turning on the City Watch, and with ‘Luthor Largent’ in command, the gold cloaks swear loyalty to ‘Daemon’ and by extension to ‘Rhaenyra.’ Although this opens the route for ‘Rhaenyra’ to claim her throne, she has yet to take the position.

‘Rhaenyra’ kills ‘Otto Hightower’ despite some hesitation in the beginning

‘Rhaenyra’ does not get a clear path to the Iron Throne right away. There is a shock waiting for her. It is revealed that ‘Daemon’ found a gift for himself in the castle dungeons, but the reality behind the gift is not revealed until the final scene. It is then disclosed that ‘Otto’ has been kept as a prisoner for all this time, and he is supposed to be executed. But the problem here is that ‘Rhaenyra’ is not sure if she can go through with it.

‘Daemon’ brings ‘Otto’ before ‘Rhaenyra’, anticipating that she will take his head. Yet ‘Rhaenyra’ has never taken a life, and she hesitates, doubting her ability to do it. After a pause, and with ‘Otto’ himself asking ‘Daemon’ to carry it out for a faster end, ‘Rhaenyra’ lifts her sword and strikes. It takes her two swings because the first one doesn’t finish him. ‘Otto’ dies there in the throne room, his head falling to the floor.

‘Otto’s’ death is not the sole execution in the throne room. Once ‘Rhaenyra’ completes her kill, ‘Daemon’ steps up next. He quickly takes off the head of ‘Jasper Wylde,’ the Master of Laws, who tried to assault ‘Alicent’ sexually earlier in the episode. As a staunch backer of ‘Aegon’ and now a criminal himself, his execution is a straightforward decision for the Blacks.
