Kaitlin Olsen starrer 'High Potential' Season 2 is set to return after a midseason break. Here's what we know about the upcoming plot.
High Potential fans have been counting the days for its return. The show, which took a tense midseason break, left viewers with numerous significant cliffhangers, unresolved mysteries, and a shocking scene. But after months of anxiety, the ABC crime drama is finally set to return with the LAPD Major Crimes Division and 'Morgan Gillory' back in the spotlight. For those unaware, the show left its viewers on the edge after its winter finale, with 'Morgan's' safety in jeopardy amid the mayhem. But now Season 2 is ready to pick up the pieces.
High Potential Season 2 is officially set to return on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, after a midseason break. New episodes of the show are set to air weekly once again on ABC. Meanwhile, the episodes will be available for next-day streaming on Hulu. The network confirmed the release date of the show before the show went on break, reassuring fans that the show had not been cancelled and that the break was pre-planned.
For those unaware, the midseason pauses are common for ABC network shows. It mainly takes place around the holiday season of Christmas and New Year, allowing the production teams to relax, production schedules to reset, and storylines to be paced out across a full season. According to ABC, the break allows the creative team to build momentum for the second half of Season 2, which promises higher stakes and more complex character arcs.
Similar to many other ABC series, High Potential was paused after the winter finale to align with ABC's seasonal programming schedule. After the break, viewers would now get to see an intense run of episodes where new characters would be introduced, the mystery surrounding 'Roman's disappearance would escalate, and 'Morgan' would venture into more risky territory.
According to showrunner Todd Harthan, the second half of Season 2 has been specially designed to feel sharper, with more mysteries in the story, making the break seem like a strategic move rather than an issue. Moreover, he believes that the break has helped audiences to maintain interest after the show delivered one of its most dramatic episodes before the break.
In regard to the plot, the midseason finale ended on a major cliffhanger where 'Morgan Gillory', portrayed by Kaitlin Olson, has found herself alone in a hotel room sharing cosy moments with 'Rhys Eastman', who claims to be an art recovery specialist portrayed by Aidan Turner. He claims to be of help to the LAPD for solving the case, but a suspicious scar on his shoulder is similar to the gunshot wound on the alleged thief of high-profile art. It makes 'Morgan' wary of him.
Simultaneously, the long-running mystery around 'Morgan' ex, Roman's’ disappearance has become more fishy. There was a mysterious photo of a bearded man in 'Roman's' missing backpack that hinted he could be someone with vital information about his past. But it seems like even the bearded man has risen to action. Subsequently, in the final episode, we saw how the episodes ended with the same man confronting 'Arthur', setting the stage for a major face-off.
Now, with the return of High Potential Season 2, ABC has revealed that 'Morgan' will have more suspicions around the missing Rembrandt case, where 'the Roman' plot has become more dangerous for those involved in it. Moreover, the viewers can expect a clash between 'Morgan' and 'Captain Nick Wagner' portrayed by Steve Harthan, whose baseless outburst on 'Morgan' has raised several questions around his role and what he might be hiding.
The French-Belgian series, Haut Potentiel Intellectuel, inspires High Potential. The show is based on the story of 'Morgan Gillory', a single mother of three kids with an IQ of 169. She has an extraordinary ability to notice patterns, which has helped her secure a consulting role with the LAPD. Alongside her partnership with the typical detective, 'Adam Keredec' played by Daniel Sunjata, they help solve several complex cases, including a secret investigation into her ex, 'Roman's 15-year-old disappearance. The series also stars Judy Reyes, Javicia Leslie and Deniz Akdeniz.
