'I'd Be Dead Within Five Years', Hayden Panettiere's Doctor Gave Her A Warning About Her Health

Actress Hayden Panettiere, known for her roles in HeroesScream, and Nashville, passed away at age 36. The cause of Panettiere’s death is still not revealed, but the news of her passing has come as a shock to all her fans. Despite being a popular star, Hayden’s life was marred by personal challenges, which also included her substance addiction. She once revealed how her doctor warned her against drinking.

Hayden Panettiere’s doctor warned her she could die within five years

Hayden was addicted to alcohol, as she sought it as a relief from her struggles. In her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, Hayden revealed that alcohol became an escape from the pain she was experiencing in nearly every aspect of her life. As per her, consuming alcohol allowed her to temporarily numb everything she was trying to avoid.

It allowed her to push away the pain she was suffering, be it her ex-Brian Hickerson’s abuse or her daughter’s custody battle. In her memoir, Hayden recalled her doctor’s alarming advice for her as she penned:

“A doctor told me that if I didn't stop drinking, I'd be dead within five years.”

The actress entered treatment in 2020 for what became an eight-month stay. During her treatment, Hayden experienced painful withdrawal symptoms as her body adjusted to sobriety. In her words:

“As my nervous system tried to regulate itself without the depressant effects of alcohol, it went into overdrive, and my whole body shook. I couldn't sleep, and my head pounded like it was pressing against my skull.”

Quitting was not at all easy for Hayden, who experienced terrifying moments during withdrawal. She once heard strange voices during her withdrawal and was so terrified of it that she crawled to her bathroom and laid herself on the tile, while waiting for the panic to pass. After two weeks, she started to feel calm and to experience physical and emotional safety.

Hayden Panettiere’s untimely death

Days before her 37th birthday, the Nashville-fame actress bid adieu to the world. Hayden Panettiere's rep has also confirmed her passing in a statement with ABC News. The statement called Hayden a force of nature who "brought immeasurable" love and joy to everyone. The statement read:

"It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden. She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her -- and to the millions who watched her onscreen."

As per reports, Hayden’s on-again, off-again partner, Brian Hickerson, flew from Los Angeles to South LA on Saturday, August 15, 2026. Hayden Panettiere became a household name as a child actress before landing her breakout role as cheerleader 'Claire Bennet' on NBC's Heroes. She also had another impressive run as country singer 'Juliette Barnes' on Nashville. She also earned two Golden Globe nominations for Nashville.

She later appeared in the Scream franchise, including Scream 4 and Scream VI. Hayden leaves behind her 11-year-old daughter, whom she shares with ex-partner Wladimir Klitschko, the former Ukrainian heavyweight boxing champion.
