The earthquake claimed thousands of lives. According to Reuters and The New York Times, a total of 1,400 people lost their lives, and 3,300 people were injured. Reportedly, on June 27, 2026, 78,000 people were reported missing, with 13,000 being located recently. The doublet earthquake claimed thousands of lives, and it was former MLB star Gorkys Hernandez who lost his wife, only six months after their wedding.
Gorkys Hernandez played MLB for six seasons, reportedly starting at the age of 17. Speaking about the current scenario, Gorkys has been shattered as his wife, Deisy Maria Tovar De Hernandez, passed away. Initially, Deisy couldn't be located. It was Gorkys, who took to his IG stories and revealed that Deisy was one of those who were missing. During that time, a photo of Deisy was reportedly found, wherein she was reportedly seen beside the rubble. Following this, on June 26, 2026, Gorkys took to his social media and revealed that it couldn't be confirmed whether his wife had passed away or not, and they were not informed about the same. However, on June 27, 2026, Gorkys announced that Deisy had passed away.
To mention, Deisy was travelling with Gorkys and was at the Hotel Eduards in Macuto. Gorkys was set to play a game for the Venezuela league's La Guaira Delfines. Soon after the double earthquake hit, the player reportedly rushed to the hotel to look for their family members. However, Deisy couldn't be located. Coming back to Gorkys' announcement about his wife's death, he dropped a photo of his wife and penned a long, emotional note.
In the post, Gorkys said that Deisy is, was and will always be the queen of his life. He further added that Deisy will always be with him, and he knows that. In the long note, Gorkys revealed that Deisy taught him to be strong, no matter what the situation is like. Gorkys vows that he will continue to be what he learned from his wife and will face this challenging phase. An excerpt from his note could be read as:
"Give me strength, love of my life, because we had a mission together. Now I'm here to fulfill it for you. You taught me to be strong through every moment in life, even though it isn't easy. But this is how you wanted me to be, and this is how I will be.”
Gorkys Hernandez played for six seasons and spent the majority of his career with the San Francisco Giants. Apart from that, he also played with the Boston Red Sox, Pittsburgh Pirates and Miami Marlins. He began his career as a teenager and started with the minor leagues before making it to the MLB, during which he won a Minor League Award for 54 bases in a single season. Not much is known about his love life as of now; however, he married Deisy only 6 months ago, in December 2025. Deisy's profile includes their civil wedding video, in which the couple looked the happiest. Deisy left behind her daughter from a previous relationship.
