Gloria's death was confirmed by her team in a statement shared on her Instagram handle on September 3, 2026 (ET). The post revealed that the beloved journalist had passed away at her home in New York City on Wednesday, September 2, 2026 (ET).
The statement said she died peacefully and was surrounded by people who loved her. While her cause of death is yet to be disclosed, Gloria Steinem's representatives have asked people who wanted to honor her memory to light a candle and make donations to Gloria's Foundation charity. The official statement said Gloria continued working for equality until the very end of her life. It described her as someone who lived with an independent spirit, curiosity, and a strong sense of humor. Part of the post read:
"Yesterday, Gloria Steinem passed away peacefully at her home in New York City, surrounded by some of the many who loved her. Gloria’s near-century on earth was a life well lived, and she continued working for equality until the very end. Gloria's greatest gift was her ability to listen to others and make them feel seen and heard. Her words, actions, and example gave people permission to be their truest selves. Gloria lived true to her independent spirit, always with curiosity and a great sense of humor."
According to reports, over several decades, Gloria Steinem worked on social issues including reproductive freedom, domestic violence, workplace discrimination, and gender inequality. With her diligence and determination, she became one of the most recognizable figures of the second-wave feminist movement that grew during the 1960s. However, her journey didn't begin as a feminist leader, but rather as a journalist.
Gloria Steinem's breakthrough came in 1963, when she went undercover at Hugh Hefner's Playboy Club, worked as a Playboy Bunny cocktail waitress under a fake name, and investigated what life was really like for women working at the famous clubs. She used the name Marie for the assignment and even lied about her age, claiming she was 24 when she was actually 28.
Gloria Steinem later published her investigation as "A Bunny’s Tale" in Show magazine and exposed the Playboy Club. She revealed that the clubs had sexist and exploitative working conditions and highlighted how poorly these women were paid despite the glamorous image associated with the Playboy brand. Gloria also wrote about the physical demands of the job, including spending long hours in high heels and tight corsets.
Despite becoming one of the world's most famous feminist leaders, Gloria Steinem came from a relatively modest and unusual background. Talking about her early life, she was born on March 25, 1934, in Toledo, Ohio, and grew up with an older sister, Susanne, and their parents, Ruth and Leo. Her father worked as a traveling antiques salesman, and the family spent much of the feminist's childhood moving around the country because of his work.
