The famous Oscar-winning singer-songwriter, Glen Hansard, left for the heavenly abode after a horrific motorcycle crash in Dublin's Lucan. As soon as the collision happened, emergency services were alerted to it on the R109 Lower Road, between Tinkers Hill and Rugged Lane, at 4:30 a.m.
For the unversed, apart from being the frontman of the rock group, he was also featured in The Commitments. In 2007, he won an Academy Award for Best Original Song for Falling Slowly, which he wrote for the film Once. Police are investigating the crash and appealing to witnesses to help them know what happened in the wee hours when the accident happened.
Talking about Glen, he was born in 1970 and busked on its streets before he landed the role of Outspan Foster. Glen was also one half of the rock duo, The Swell Season, and also released solo albums such as Didn't He Ramble, which was nominated for a Grammy for Best Folk Album in 2016.
Glen received treatment at the scene, but he couldn't survive and was pronounced dead soon after. His agency released a statement, sharing the heartbreaking news. They shared that, with broken hearts, they are announcing the passing of Glen following a road traffic accident in Dublin.
The statement also revealed that the family is deeply shocked and heartbroken by this sudden loss, and they requested privacy for the family in the most difficult time of their lives. The statement can be read as:
"With broken hearts, we announce the passing of Glen Hansard, who passed away in the early hours of this morning, following a road traffic accident in Dublin. Glen’s family is deeply shocked and heartbroken by this tragic loss and respectfully requests privacy at this extremely difficult time. The family is grateful for the support they have received and wishes to thank the emergency services who attended the scene. As this matter remains the subject of an active Garda investigation, no further comment will be made at this time."
Glen Hansard is survived by his wife, Maire Saaritsa, and their three-year-old son. The couple got married in 2022, and they welcomed their first child, a baby boy, in the same year. The couple used to split their time between Ireland and Finland. Glen proposed to Maire in 2020 after the death of his mother.
At the age of 52, Glen embraced fatherhood for the first time as he welcomed his son, Christy. Talking about his child, he revealed that in the last 52 years he had been the most important person in his life, but suddenly he got a perspective shift as he found another important person. He said:
"For 52 years, I was the most important person in my own life, and then suddenly I got a complete perspective shift, and I'm absolutely loving it. To be of service to this young mind, to this young life, is just... I can't believe I didn't do it before now. Isn't it true when the student is ready, the teacher appears?"
Glen was known for his act of kindness and his campaign against homelessness. In 2016, he became a part of Home Sweet Home, which helped homeless people to help them find shelter.
