Erika Kirk reflects on her grief at losing her husband, Charlie Kirk

Recently, a heartfelt essay by Erika Kirk was published in The New York Times, where she opened up about her grief through her writing. As a grieving wife, she recalled her life after Charlie's fatal shooting on September 10, 2025 at the Utah University campus. It not only ended the life of a young political activist but also left a grieving family. In her words:

"I am still learning how to walk through each day carrying the grief I feel for my Charlie. Some days I have a vague understanding of God's plan, others I don't, but I trust Him completely."

Erika acknowledged that one day she would understand God's plans more clearly than at other times. Still, her faith continues to guide her through the pain. She also revealed one piece of advice, which helped her get through the difficult year. Erika recalled that she had a conversation with Second Lady Usha Vance just a day after Charlie's death, when it was nearly impossible for her to process the loss. When she told Usha that she did not know how she would overcome the major loss, the latter asked her to focus only on the next 15 minutes.

The same approach, Erika says, has become a significant source of strength during her dark period of grief. Following the advice, she no longer worries about the future. Instead, she has learned to take every moment as it comes. Now, the approach helps her survive days, weeks, and months after Charlie's death.

The TUPSA CEO also emphasized that grief is something everyone understands, regardless of their background or beliefs. So, she hopes that her attempts to share her experience help others who are also mourning the loss of their loved ones.

A few days ago, a judge ruled that prosecutors brought enough evidence for the case to go to trial. In fact, the defendant also did not plead guilty to the gruesome murder and prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for him.
