Eventually, during her teen years, she transitioned into acting and landed several roles in movies. While she was only 13, back in 2000, Emmy made her debut with the indie drama Songcatcher, where she also had a duet with Dolly Parton.
Well, Emmy's breakthrough came 4 years later in 2004, when she was seen in The Day After Tomorrow and also in the musical, The Phantom of the Opera. She also grabbed attention while playing the role of 'Fiona Gallagher' in Shameless, wherein she was seen for over a decade. Well, while her professional life is known to others, nothing much is known about her personal life until recently, as she shared details about her first wedding, which ended in a divorce.
As a matter of fact, Emmy Rossum always knew that her first marriage, which she entered into at the age of 21, would end in divorce; however, she did so anyway after her ex-husband gave her an ultimatum. Emmy recently sat for an interview on the Call Her Daddy podcast, wherein she revealed that when she was just 21 years old, she started dating Justin Siegel, who was working with Interscope Records back then.
It had been only a few months since they dated, and soon the actress landed a role in the 2009 film Dragon Ball: Evolution, which required her to relocate, as filming was in Durango, Mexico, for six months. Well, Justin gave an ultimatum to Emmy, asking her to either break up or get married. Emmy revealed that the one thing that hurts her the most is abandonment, and she didn't want that. On top of that, she thought divorce was not that complicated.
So, Emmy went forward and got married to Siegel, who printed a marriage contract online, and they found someone on the internet to officiate their wedding. Emmy knew it would end in divorce, as she said that her gut feeling knew it, and when the interviewer asked if she knew that the marriage would end, the actress replied with a strong '100 per cent'. Emmy didn't tell anybody about the wedding, and through the six months of their marriage, Siegel didn't meet her, and after she was back in her home, the couple knew they were not meant to be together. It was during that moment that Emmy's mom got to know about her secret wedding. Speaking about the same, Emmy revealed:
"I told my mom, 'Hey, I'm breaking up with Justin, and I need a lawyer.' She was like, 'You did not.' I was like, 'I did.' And my mom has always been somebody that mobilises. If anyone is going through a breakup—my mom is not employed right now—so, if you need someone to show up, she'll send you for a manicure and be like, 'I have the U-Haul. Go take care of yourself.'"
For those who don't know, Emmy is married to Sam Esmail. The couple met in 2013, when Emmy landed a role in the movie Comet, written and directed by Sam. Sam and Emmy were working off-screen and developed a deep bond. The duo fell in love, and made their relationship public during the premiere of Comet in 2014. It was in 2015 when Sam proposed to Emmy, in the most cinematic way possible. Well, in 2017, the couple got married in New York City. In 2021, the couple welcomed their first child, a daughter, and two years later, their family was completed with the arrival of their son.
