According to recent reports, there have been rumours that Meryl Streep reduced her salary to star in 'Devil Wears Prada 2'.
The sequel to The Devil Wears Prada, released on May 1, 2026, opened to mixed reviews. The film offers insight into the cutthroat world of print journalism and how the fashion and runway world operates. The titular cast includes Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci. Ever since the film was released, there has been constant chatter about the salary received by the stars.
As Meryl Streep reprised her iconic role as 'Miranda Priestly', there were reports that she was paid a whopping salary compared to the other two actresses in the film. However, insiders told Variety that Meryl settled for less to ensure that her two co-stars would also collect a nice pay.
The source further revealed that Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt negotiated a “favoured nations” deal with the distributor and received a sum of USD 12.5 million fee for their roles. The actress can expect more money, as they reportedly negotiated box-office bonuses as well. As per the source, the actress can get an additional USD 20 million if the film makes more money.
Meryl Streep sat down for a candid conversation with Deadline, during which she opened up about almost rejecting the movie, The Devil Wears Prada, in 2006. However, she eventually agreed when the makers promised her a high paycheque. Meryl Streep was quoted as saying:
"I read the script. Script was great. And they called me up and they made an offer, and I said, 'No, not going to do it.' I knew it was going to be a hit, and I wanted to see if I doubled my ask. And they went right away and said sure. And I thought, I'm 50, 60, it took me this long to understand that I could do that. They needed me, I felt. ... I was ready to retire. But, you know, that was a lesson."
Directed by David Frankel and written by Aline Brosh McKenna, The Devil Wears Prada 2 features an elaborate star cast which also includes Justin Theroux, Simone Ashley, Kenneth Branagh, Tracie Thoms and more. The story picks up in the current day, where 'Miranda' is still in charge of the Runway magazine. Unlike previously, 'Andy' has spent 20 years becoming a serious journalist at a fictional publication, only to be fired along with many other colleagues.
In the opening scenes of the new film, she receives an award for her investigative journalism, and moments before her speech, she learns that she and her colleagues have been laid off. Soon, Runway hires her as a features editor. The film then shifts to 'Andy' doing everything to impress 'Miranda'.
Within days of The Devil Wears Prada 2 hitting theatres, people started quipping about a possible third sequel. Well, while we do not know whether there will be The Devil Wears Prada 3, the film's stars, Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, and Emily Blunt, revealed that they would totally come back for a third movie if one condition is met. While speaking with People, the trio unanimously agreed that the condition would be “the script.” They stated that if the script is good, then they will definitely return.
