Ian Rapoport reacts to the Dianna Russini and Mike Vrabel controversy as the NFL scandal continues, drawing major attention.
Dianna Russini’s sudden exit from The Athletic has continued to draw attention across the NFL world, and now one longtime insider is openly talking about how difficult the situation has been to watch. The controversy involving Russini and New England Patriots head coach, Mike Vrabel has stayed in headlines for weeks after photos of the two at an Arizona resort surfaced online. Since then, the story has grown larger, leading to an internal review at The Athletic and eventually Russini stepping away from the company. While Russini has stayed mostly silent, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport recently shared how deeply uncomfortable the entire situation has become for people close to both sides.
Speaking on the Between the Tackles podcast last week, Ian Rapoport admitted the public fallout has been painful to follow because he personally knows both Dianna Russini and Mike Vrabel. Instead of discussing the situation like a normal football story, Rapoport said this one felt far more personal. Rapoport said:
“I’ve never really seen it with people that I know. And it’s really different and, like, not good and sad and just, like, all around.”
Rapoport also said the situation became far more serious than he first thought as more reports and photos continued appearing online over the past several weeks. He explained that watching the personal lives of people he knows turn into nonstop public discussion has been difficult and emotional for everyone connected to the situation.
The controversy first exploded after Page Six published photos that appeared to show Russini and Vrabel together at an adults-only resort in Arizona. After that, more images surfaced online over the following weeks, pushing the story deeper into national NFL coverage. The Athletic later launched an internal investigation into Russini’s conduct. Soon after, news broke that she had resigned from the company. Russini has not publicly commented since her departure was announced.
While Dianna Russini’s career at The Athletic ended during the controversy, Mike Vrabel has remained in his role with the Patriots. Reports said the coach began counselling as he tried to repair his marriage following the public attention surrounding the scandal. The situation even affected his work schedule during a major NFL event. In late April, Vrabel reportedly travelled to Utah for counselling sessions, which caused him to miss the final day of the NFL Draft.
Russini, meanwhile, has mostly stayed away from the spotlight since leaving The Athletic. There have been no interviews, public statements, or social media explanations from her side since the resignation became official. Recently, however, she was seen in Manhattan with her husband, Shake Shack executive Kevin Goldschmidt. According to the Daily Mail, the couple spent time with friends at a bar near Madison Square Garden before attending a Bruce Springsteen concert.
A witness told the outlet that Russini and Goldschmidt appeared relaxed and in good spirits while spending time with their group before the show started. The report added that people around them noticed the group laughing, talking, and enjoying food and drinks together. Even with that public appearance, the story surrounding Russini and Vrabel continues to remain one of the most talked-about off-field topics in the NFL. As both sides continue handling the fallout privately, many around the league are still reacting to how the situation changed careers, relationships, and public perception.
