The NFL insider from The Athletic has been placed on leave by its parent company, The New York Times, after photos of her with New England Patriots head coach, Mike Vrabel surfaced this week. The pictures, first published by Page Six, show the two spending time together at a resort in Sedona, Arizona. Both Russini and Vrabel have responded, saying the situation is being misunderstood. Still, the company has started an internal review, and Russini has paused her work as the process continues.
The situation began when photos from March 28, 2026, appeared online. They revealed that Dianna Russini and Mike Vrabel were together at a high-end resort in Sedona. According to The Daily Mail, The Athletic quickly moved to review the matter after the images became public. Russini has not published any new stories since then. Her podcast, Scoop City, has also stopped releasing episodes. A spokesperson told Awful Announcing that the show was already “in transition since the Super Bowl,” but the timing has raised questions. Both, Russini and Vrabel have denied any wrongdoing. Speaking through The Athletic to Front Office Sports, Russini said the photos do not show the full picture.
Russini said, “The photos don’t represent the group of six people who were hanging out during the day. Like most journalists in the NFL, reporters interact with sources away from stadiums and other venues.” The Athletic also released a statement defending her. The outlet called the images “misleading” and said they lacked “essential context.” Vrabel, speaking to the New York Post, dismissed the situation as “laughable.” Despite these responses, the review is ongoing, and The New York Times has not shared further details.
While the photos themselves caught attention, the bigger question now is how they surfaced. According to Front Office Sports, the images were offered to multiple news outlets by someone not linked to a known photo agency. TMZ was reportedly tipped off before publication. The outlet learned that Vrabel was seen with a woman at the resort and later identified her as Russini. However, while TMZ was still deciding on buying the images, Page Six published them first. This has led to more speculation.
Former NFL player, Emmanuel Acho spoke about it on his show Speakeasy. He suggested the photos looked planned. “Somebody hired a private investigator,” Acho said. “That was not a fan just walking by.” There is no proof of that claim, and no evidence has confirmed that a private investigator was involved. Eyewitness reports have also added confusion. Page Six reports that three people claimed they did not see Russini and Vrabel with anyone else. But sources close to them say they were part of a larger group.
Away from the photos, social media has also brought up Russini’s past comments about her personal life. Old clips from shows like ESPN’s Get Up and The Dan Le Batard Show have resurfaced, where she joked about her husband, Kevin Goldschmidt. Still, none of that is part of the official review. The focus remains on the photos and whether any professional lines were crossed. For now, both Russini and Vrabel continue to deny any improper behaviour. The investigation by The New York Times is still ongoing, and there is no clear timeline for when it will end.
