Mica, 30, estranged wife of former Solid Rock pastor John-Paul Miller, was found at Lumber River State Park on April 27, 2024, after calling 911 herself. The show by the Murdaugh Murders directors, Mike Gasparro and Julia Willoughby Nason, uses unseen footage and first-time interviews with friends and family to explore what led to her sudden passing.
Although a lot of details about Mica Miller’s early life remain unknown, she tied the knot with John-Paul Miller in 2018. For the unversed, John was a pastor at the Solid Rock Church, where Mica also worked, leading the women’s ministry and worship team. The duo filed for divorce in October 2023.
A few months after the divorce, Mica was involuntarily hospitalized for two days in February 2024. When she was discharged, Mica discovered that John-Paul allegedly took her purse and car keys. Mica went to check her car at the Walmart Neighborhood Market, but it was missing. Mica eventually approached the cops, accusing her husband of stealing her car.
On the other hand, John-Paul told the police that Mica suffers from episodes during the Christmas period and that she spends a lot of money after she discontinues taking her prescriptions. Despite the allegations, a case was not filed because the couple’s divorce was not finalized yet. The situation took a different turn in March 2024, when Mica told the police that her tire was deflated with something.
In the car case, Mica Miller mentioned a suspect possibly involved in deflating her tires. However, the man was not taken into custody due to a lack of evidence. Mica later alleged that the same individual met her at a gas station on the same day, where she refused to talk to him. The man appeared again at a Honda dealership, where the mechanics were able to recover a tracking device from Mica’s vehicle.
Mica was also trying to get a restraining order against her husband at the local magistrate's office. One day, outside the magistrate's office, a white Honda Accord appeared, and Mica identified that the suspect was sitting inside. The car slowly left the spot. A summons was set for March 26, 2024. The church then alleged that Mica moved USD 1,199 in donations meant for its Dare to Care Mission in Kenya to her personal account. Police later found insufficient evidence in the matter. The bench trial on March 26, 2024, for the restraining order was held, but the outcome remains undisclosed.
On April 27, 2024, Mica Miller left her residence during the morning hours and returned around 45 minutes later. She left her house again and entered the Dick’s Pawn Shop in Myrtle Beach. Mica appeared on the surveillance footage, and she reportedly purchased a weapon and ammunition. She was then traveling on Highway 501 near Four Mile Road and eventually arrived at another store, 41 Grocery and Grill.
Mica purchased a drink and gas at the store. More than an hour after she left the store, Mica called 911, requesting that they locate her phone. Mica threatened to commit suicide, and the call was disconnected before the authorities could take the necessary details. Robeson County deputies were sent to the Lumber River State Park for a welfare check, and they were joined by other officials, including the State Park rangers, to find Mica.
A man then approached the investigators with a bag. The man was fishing when he found the bag, which had Mica’s ID. The man reportedly heard someone crying, followed by a gunshot. Another person then called 911 about a body, saying that he found it while fishing. Mica’s car was also found at the same time, and certain items were discovered inside, including a gun case, ammunition box, and a pawn shop receipt. The gun was recovered from the water.
A week after the incident, the medical examiner revealed the cause of death in May 2024, which was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. John-Paul reacted to his wife’s death during an interview with WPDE in the same month, saying that his wife was energetic and creative. John-Paul also alleged that Mica Miller’s doctors revealed that she was “homicidal or suicidal.” He continued by saying:
“She had struggled with suicide before and each time we helped her through it and took her to her doctor and we got through it and everything was fine. She even gave a few testimonies here at church we have on video of times where she had battled suicide, but God took care of her and got her through it.”
