Amid the buzz, an old interview has resurfaced where Dax Shepard suggested a 'wife swap' to Conan O'Brien.
Dax Shepard appeared on Conan O'Brien's TBS show a few years ago. The two were talking about meeting at a dinner when Dax complimented his wife. The conversation continued as the actor praised the host's physique. Hearing them, Andy Richter said, "If you want to set up a swinger thing, you should probably do it by email." Dax laughed and responded, "I think it's a great way to break the ice."
Dax added that it could be a joke, as it was a comedy show, then looked at Conan O'Brien and said, "Get you and our wives together on that comedy show of yours. I was just teasing unless you think that's a good idea." A while later, Dax Shepard's wife, Kristen Bell, appeared on the show, and the host asked her about the 'wife swap' suggestion her husband made.
Responding to Conan O'Brien, Kristen Bell revealed that he wasn't the first person Dax Shepard had suggested something like this to. She called him free-spirited and admitted that while they were not doing swaps, Dax simply "loved" people. She was quoted as saying:
"I don't want to hurt your feelings, but you're not the first person he's tried to get us to swing with. He's a very free spirit, you know. ... Also a horn dog, but around my parents, we say free spirit. We're not actually swinging with anyone. He just loves people. He loves the human frame, and he constantly suggests at different dinner parties that we 'hang out' and 'really get to know each other.'"
The comment by Dax Shepard and then his wife, Kristen Bell, led to widespread rumors about the couple being 'swingers'. However, it was during a conversation with Jennifer Aniston that he addressed the buzz. Talking to the Friends actress, he revealed that the rumors were not true. However, he did add that if the circumstances were right, they would discuss the same. He was quoted as saying:
"There was a tabloid story about Kristen and me that we were swingers... It's not true. And we could perhaps, under the right circumstances, you know, have a very open dialogue about that, if the right participants presented themselves."
Dax Shepard has spoken about the rumor at length, including during an August 2023 episode of the podcast alongside Kristen Bell. He insisted she knew "exactly" where the buzz began. She said, "It's because you frequently make key party jokes. We'll have a dinner party or something, and as we're sitting down, you'll say, 'Everybody leave your keys.'"
Dax Shepard agreed and quipped that those people simply "do not have the same sense of humor." Recently, during an interview with The Sun, Kristen Bell shared her unconventional views on infidelity and explained why a hypothetical one-night stand would not necessarily threaten her marriage. Regarding infidelity, Kristen shared that she doesn't care if Dax ever slept with somebody else. Kristen explained that she and Dax were married and had confidence in their bond, so they weren't bothered if they had one-night stands with other people.
She added that they feel attraction towards others, just like any normal human being. Kristen Bell added that it was a privilege to have a strong bond that wouldn't be strained even if they ended up being unfaithful physically.
