After graduating with a bachelor's degree in psychology from the State University of New York at New Paltz, David created a community of his own, one that studies "the importance of focusing one's energies on service to others and the divinity of all human life." They described him as someone with “a big heart” who struggled privately despite his public persona. The family stated:

"In remembering David, it is important to hold more than one truth at once: that some of his work raised concerns about misinformation, and that he was also a person who was on an eternal quest for clarity... Beyond his public persona, he was a human navigating the same complexities and vulnerabilities that shape all our lives."
