Created by Graham Roland and based on the Leaphorn & Chee novels by Tony Hillerman, Dark Winds season 4 took 'Joe Leaphorn' (Zahn McClarnon), 'Jim Chee' (Kiowa Gordon), and 'Bernadette Manuelito' (Jessica Matten) from the Navajo Nation to 1970s Los Angeles. After a tumultuous eight-episode ride, Joe finally cracks the case and brings down a dangerous killer, but a shocking loss sets the stage for what's next.

A quick recap of Dark Winds Season 4, Episode 8

The final episode of Season 4, titled Ni' Hodisxos (The Glittering World), which premiered on April 5, 2026, picks up after Joe Leaphorn's kidnapping by assassin 'Irene Vaggan' (Franka Potente). He is trapped in a bunker alongside 'Billie Tsosie' (Jeremiah Bitsui), who is also held hostage. Irene, obsessed with Joe and his Navajo identity, wants to start a new life with him, the same reason that she killed her own grandfather, 'Gunthar' (Udo Kier).

As Irene tries to force 'Joe' and 'Billie' into a twisted "family" dynamic, Joe doesn't let his guard down and realises force won't work. Instead, he leans into Irene's fantasy and convinces her to step outside for a traditional offering ritual. Finding just the perfect moment, he escapes by triggering an explosion using a gas tank that he had spotted in the bunker site. Irene is left badly injured, and Joe finds the opportunity to free Billie and escape the bunker. Even after getting half of her face burned from the explosion, Irene stood firm.

Perhaps one of the most emotionally defining moments of the episode was when Joe decided against killing Irene, even after everything she had done. When she insisted that Joe kill her, his internal struggle after what he did to BJ Vines left him unable to repeat the same mistake. Instead, Joe brings the notorious assassin into custody. While this one decision marked a notable shift in his character, Irene can't shake off the possibility that Joe also may have secretly loved her.

While Vaggan’s arrest brings some closure, 'Dominic McNair’s (Titus Welliver) storyline ends on a frustrating note. With key evidence destroyed and witnesses eliminated, the FBI has no solid case left against him. For now, McNair walks free.

Is Gordo dead? The shocking final reveal

Just when it seemed like the storm was over for now and Joe was finally ready to step away and embrace his retirement, the story takes a devastating turn. He discovers that his close aide, 'Gordo Sena' (A Martinez), has been murdered. Gordo's death hits even harder because it was only at the beginning of the finale episode that Gordo had opened up to Joe about his own retirement. Yes, Gordo is truly gone, and his death becomes the finale’s most shocking and emotional moment.

Where is the storyline headed in Season 5?

With Gordo's murder, this means that Joe's retirement isn't coming anytime soon, and his future becomes uncertain as he finds himself pulled back into the fight. Given Gordo's shocking death, Joe's journey in the profession has a new purpose: finding out who killed his dear friend. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner John Wirth mentioned whether Joe may still opt for retirement. Wirth said:

"We played an entire season with him having made the decision right from the get-go to retire. I felt like anything short of an act of God at the end would have really been a bad play for our audience... The only real possible solution was an act of God, which made it inevitable for him to have to stay. The only thing significant enough would be someone being murdered on or near the Navajo Nation. Then, as writers, you say, “Who’s the list?” Is it Emma, is it Bernadette, Chee, is it Sena? So we decided that it should be Gordo Sena."

What we know about Dark Winds Season 5

“For four seasons now, AMC Networks has provided us with the opportunity to entertain audiences through the unique lens of a traditional crime story set on the Navajo Nation in 1972. We are one of one and never take this strong support for granted. Thanks to everyone at AMC Networks, our talented writing staff, stunning cast, and a Santa Fe crew that’s become a training ground for Native artists, we’re thrilled to be coming back for a fifth season of Dark Winds.”

All episodes of Dark Winds Season 4 are available to stream on AMC, AMC+, and Amazon Prime Video (via AMC+ channel). If reports are to be believed, the show is going to reach Netflix later in 2026.

With the emotional ending, it’s clear that Dark Winds is setting the stage for an even more intense chapter ahead. Are you excited for the next season?
