Recently, during a conversation, the 72-year-old model shared that she is rethinking the concept of happily ever after. Christie explained that she believes in soulmates but doesn’t know if they will last forever in the way that she thought they would.
It is worth mentioning that Christie has been married four times and every marriage of hers led to divorce. Amid this, people have grown curious to know what led to Christie and Peter Cook’s split. Hamptons-based architect Peter Cook is Christie’s fourth husband.
Christie Brinkley originally met architect Peter in 1979. Later, the former pair reconnected through a mutual friend in 1995. Soon after reconnecting, the ex-pair tied the knot on September 21, 1996. Two years later, the couple welcomed their first child, a daughter, Sailor Lee Brinkley-Cook, in July 1998. Peter had also adopted Christie’s son, Jack. Jack’s biological father is Richard Taubman, Christie’s third husband.
In her memoir, Uptown Girl, Christie Brinkley opened up about her fourth husband, Peter Cook’s scandalous affair with a teenage girl. The affair was exposed back in 2006, when Christie was giving a graduation speech at a local high school in the Hamptons. At the time, a man approached the American model whom she had never seen before. Recalling the moment, she wrote:
"The man said, 'Excuse me. I need to tell you that arrogant husband of yours has been having an affair with my teenage daughter.' I was so stunned that I froze. As soon as I saw him, Peter’s eyes were already trained on my face, as he began shaking his head, 'No.' When your whole world falls apart, and you realise in a heartbeat you’ve suddenly become the cliche middle-aged woman whose husband is having an affair with a much (much) younger woman, what do you do?"
After Peter Cook’s affair with the teenage girl got exposed in front of Christie, she began suspecting him. She took help from her female friends, and two of them suggested that Christie needed to search Peter’s computer for evidence. One evening, as the trio looked through Peter’s computer many explicit photos and accounts connected to adult websites. After this discovery, Christie filed for divorce from Peter. However, the split was quite messy, and Christie had to fight a long battle even after she had a prenup agreement signed. The divorce was officially finalised in 2008.
After the duo parted ways, Peter admitted his affair with a 19-year-old girl who later became his assistant. The architect mentioned that as he would find no peace in his marriage, he sought a connection. Peter added that he realised that he and Christie were living like brother and sister rather than life partners. Speaking with Barbara Walters, Peter said:
"My hope is that the world will see that I’m not the scumbag pervert that I’ve been painted to be. I was seeking a connection I could not find in my own marriage. I think the emotional aspect of our lives had changed. I think we were both feeling more like we were living with a brother and sister than a life partner… I think I just suddenly realised, when I was getting attention from someone else, that this is something that is missing in my life."
