Add BollywoodShaadis on GoogleChrista Pike is currently all over the news for all the wrong reasons. Back in 1995, she killed 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer along with her then-boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp. Pike was 18 when she committed the crime. In 1996, Pike was given the death penalty. She has spent more than thirty years behind bars for committing the crime and became the youngest woman to receive the death penalty in the United States. She is currently hospitalized and is in critical condition.
Before her execution, 50-year-old Christa Pike refused her last meal. According to reports, USD 20 was allocated for the food. However, when Pike was offered the chance to choose a last meal, she asked that the money be used to buy pizza for the homeless. Pike’s execution did not go as planned. She survived two botched lethal injection attempts. As per Pike’s attorneys, Christa had not lost consciousness even after the two doses of pentobarbital.
Pike was scheduled to be executed on September 30, 2026, at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville. Before her attempted execution, Pike’s legal team cited her blood disorder, difficulties with accessing her veins, and her history of trauma, and challenged Tennessee’s lethal injection process. They argued that lethal injection could cause unnecessary suffering for Christa. The IV team used at least seven needles in an effort to establish access, and one needle was bent at a 90-degree angle when it was removed from her body.
As Pike’s execution failed, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee stopped all executions in the state for the rest of 2026. He also ordered an independent investigation to find out exactly what went wrong during Pike’s execution attempt. On October 2, 2026, Pike’s attorneys filed the emergency motion in Davidson County Chancery Court, seeking an order requiring the Tennessee Department of Correction (TDOC) to preserve all evidence related to the failed execution attempt.
Christa Pike’s lawyers asked the authorities to stop her execution by submitting a 226-page clemency petition. However, the petition was rejected. UN human rights experts also asked officials to stop the execution. In a recent interview with the BBC, interviewer Helen Roberts, who interviewed Christa Pike 20 years ago when she was 30, reacted to the latest developments in Colleen Slemmer’s murder case.
Helen said that Pike had hope that someone might intervene and consider how her difficult childhood and mental health problems had affected her life and actions. During her interview with Helen, Pike confessed that she never received love from anyone except her grandmother. Her parents, Carissa Hansen and Glenn Pike, were alcoholics and neglected her. In fact, when Christa was a teenager, she was sexually abused twice.
Helen shared that Pike understood that she had two possible outcomes: being executed or spending the rest of her life in prison. According to Helen, Christa preferred life in prison rather than the death penalty and wanted to die peacefully. Reacting to her failed execution, Helen said the whole situation felt strange and disturbing. On the day of the execution, Helen kept thinking about Pike. She said:
"I'd read she had refused her last meal... I cannot even imagine what she was thinking, how she felt, and how you prepare yourself knowing you're going to die."
Further, in the interview, Helen mentioned that although Christa was a different person when she interviewed her, that does not diminish her crime. Roberts said that Pike deserved to be in prison. Helen said:
"She committed a crime; she took another woman's life, and she had to be punished for it."
