Add BollywoodShaadis on GoogleChrista Pike went from being the first woman in Tennessee to receive the death penalty to the first person in Tennessee and modern U.S. history to have survived a lethal injection execution. Now back in prison, many await what happens next. Amid this, almost a fortnight after the botched execution attempt, it has been revealed that the death row inmate didn't receive any emergency care for half an hour.
According to 911 dispatch recordings reviewed by the Associated Press, Christa Pike didn't receive help for a while after her botched execution. This was reportedly due to a misunderstanding between prison officials and first responders. For the unversed, Christa was scheduled to be executed on September 30, 2026. However, despite administering two lethal injections, Christa survived and was taken to a hospital.
The 911 dispatch recordings revealed that it took over half an hour for prison officials to even confirm to first responders that the call for help was legitimate. The delay reportedly stemmed from some confusion between the first responders and the prison officials. It is being reported that it took the first responders a while before it was established whether help was actually needed in the execution chamber.
According to the report, the first call about Christa Pike came in at 8:40 PM. However, 23 minutes later, it was claimed as a "false call" by an unidentified person. 31 minutes later, at 9:11 PM, the prison official made a second call. During this call, they confirmed that the call was legitimate and that they needed help as soon as possible.
Christa Pike was soon after taken to an undisclosed hospital, where she remained unconscious for days. She suffered severe damage from the botched execution, and her lawyers were even informed that she was brain dead at one point in time. However, hours before she was supposed to be taken off life support, she woke up.
As you know, Christa Prike survived 2 lethal injections during her attempted execution and was rushed to the hospital for emergency care. According to her lawyers, the death row inmate suffered major psychological trauma in the whole ordeal. It was on October 7, 2026, that Christa's lawyer Randy Spivey revealed that while he was not with Christa when she woke up, she was aware that the state had tried to execute her.
While declining to answer specific medical questions, Randy Spivey said she is often "spaced out" for extended periods and still confused about a number of things. He added that they have already filed a case against the state on their client's behalf and spoke out after the first hearing in those proceedings. He was quoted as saying:
"I don't want to speculate too much, but from our understanding the first thing she said when she woke up was, 'Where am I, and who are you?'"
After Christa Pike woke up, she was kept under observation for a few days before being sent back to prison. Her attorneys confirmed on Saturday, October 10, 2026, that she had been released from the hospital, but is still receiving medical attention even though she's back behind bars. For those who are not aware of the case, Christa was sentenced to death for the brutal murder of her classmate Colleen Slemmer in 1995. While many wait to see what will happen next, there is no word on any rescheduled date for her execution.
