Charlie Kirk’s mom, Kathryn Kirk, and widow, Erika Kirk, spoke about the aftermath of Charlie Kirk’s assassination and how the family copes with the tragedy. Speaking to Vanity Fair, Kathryn opened up about the public scrutiny Erika faced after taking on her role as CEO of Turning Point USA. For the unversed, it is a nonprofit organization founded by Charlie for high school and college students.
In April 2026, the president of Turning Point USA’s University of Georgia chapter resigned and claimed the organization had strayed from Charlie’s vision under Erika’s leadership. But Kathryn said Charlie would have wanted Erika to take the role and would have been upset by how his wife was treated on social media. Speaking about the same, she said:
“We knew Charlie in a way that no one else did. We can look at each other’s eyes, and we know the depth of our despair.”
In the same conversation, Kathryn also spoke about the reports of tension in their family regarding Charlie’s will. Months after Charlie’s death, a rumor surfaced on social media in which someone claimed that Charlie Kirk changed his will before his death, leaving nothing to Erika and assigning all of his earnings and property to his children. But the claims were never verified.
Additionally, reports said Charlie’s parents were not getting along with Erika and were fighting over his will. But Kathryn has now addressed the conspiracy theories and revealed that there was no truth in the claims, as she said:
“We were 100 percent behind her. Erika and I have, through the trauma, grown closer.”
Soon after Charlie’s death, Erika faced scrutiny for many things. From resuming work to her close connection with Vice President JD Vance, she faced heavy online scrutiny. When asked how she dealt with the criticism after Charlie’s death, Erika said:
“I’m built different. I do not know how to explain it other than this world will not break me.”
After a year since Charlie Kirk’s assassination, Erika penned a heartfelt tribute to her late husband. On her social media, she shared a black-and-white wedding photo of herself holding hands with Charlie, captioning the image simply, "until Heaven."
Charlie Kirk was just 31 when he was assassinated while interacting with Utah State University students on September 10, 2025. His death at age 31 left Erika raising their two young children and eventually stepping into a leadership role at the organization he founded.
Shortly after posting a tribute on his death anniversary, Erika shared another Instagram story, posting a photo of herself walking with her two children. She thanked the people who have supported her family since Charlie's death, writing:
“To every person who has loved us, prayed for us, and carried our children and me before the Lord, not only today, but every day this past year...from the deepest place in my heart, thank you. God, in His mercy, has used so many of you to steady us through the unimaginable. I will never have the words to adequately express what your prayers and love have meant to our family."
