Add BollywoodShaadis on GoogleMy Grandfather Charles Manson, has brought Charles Manson back into the headlines. The documentary follows the story of Sophia Maddox and how her world changed when she found out her father, Daniel Arguelles, was Manson's son. She shared some personal footage she captured over the years, which eventually became the foundation for Hulu's documentary. So, as we explore what it is about, let's also take a look at where Maddox is now.
Sophia Maddox was born in El Segundo, California, and spent a big chunk of her childhood in NY. Her parents parted ways when she was young and spent her time divided between two homes. While not much is known about her mom, her father is a former artist and model, and allegedly played a huge role in shaping her interests. By the age of 22, Maddox was living in LA, working towards establishing herself in the entertainment world.
To survive during the initial years, she did a variety of jobs. In 2022, Sophia Maddox was on a trip to NYC when she contracted COVID-19 on her way back. During that period, she was on a call with her father, Daniel Arguelles, when he told her that he had received confirmation that his father was the notorious serial killer Charles Manson. The revelation was difficult for Maddox to believe and deeply unsettled her, making her question her own identity.
Following the revelation, Sophia Maddox began her research on her grandfather, Charles Manson, through countless news reports and media accounts. She later said that much of what she encountered felt sensationalized, which made her seek out the truth for herself. This quest led her to retrace Manson's life by visiting every place connected to him. She spoke with numerous people who had known him over the years, including former members of the "Manson Family".
The documentary follows Sophia Maddox's same search for answers, and she speaks about her investigation into Charles Manson. She also reflects on how it contributed to a deterioration in her relationship with her father, Daniel Arguelles, who did not appear eager to revisit or explore Manson's past. However, the more she learned about her grandfather, the more she noticed what she believed were similarities between the lives of her father and grandfather, drawing parallels that she felt could not be ignored.
Throughout the process, she said her goal was to break the cycle of trauma that had affected generations of her family. Working closely with her therapist, Sophia Maddox tried to understand the weight of the legacy she had inherited and confront the emotional impact it had on her life. She also tried to patch things up with her father.
However, those attempts ultimately ended in an argument that led him to cut off contact with her. Despite the pain, Sophia remained grateful to have found her own truth and felt she had begun healing wounds that had long existed within her family's bloodline.
Over the years, Sophia Maddox took her grandfather's name and gave it her own twist. She is now based in LA and works as an actress, director, and producer while continuing to build her career in the entertainment industry. In 2012, she appeared in an episode of the television series Bunheads, which is one of her first credited screen roles. In 2020, she was cast as 'Sky' in the short film Saturday School.
The following year, in 2021, she took on roles in the short films Precipice, where she portrays 'Helen', and From Ashes, in which she plays 'Evan'. Sophia Maddox made her debut as a director and producer in 2022 with Hart of the Wild Bunch. The film gained her worldwide recognition on the independent film circuit after it was selected for the LA Shorts International Film Festival in 2023. That same year, Sophia appeared as 'Maeve' in the short film Complicated Order.
