During the NBA Finals, Cardi B performed at halftime, and Charles Barkley made a comment about her, leading to backlash against him. And now, he has a reaction to the same, that too, a dare. To mention, it was not a direct comment on the backlash that he has been facing for his on-air jab at Cardi B, rather, it was a border remark about his contract. Well, the timing of the comment led people to align both incidents, for that matter.

Charles Barkley hopes ESPN fires him after he made a joke about Cardi B during the NBA Finals

The former NBA Hall of Fame basketball player and sports analyst, Charley Barkley, recently appeared on Fox Sports Radio and stated that he hopes he gets fired. The comment was made in a light tone, and Charles Barkley further mentioned that he has six to seven years left in his contract, and he really has the hope to get fired and to get paid. He also said that he would just love to get fired, as there is really zero chance for him to be working for the next six-seven years. Barkley could be quoted as saying:

"I'm hoping they fire me. I got six or seven years left on my contract that they know I got no chance of doing. I would love for them to fire me and have to pay me for the next six or seven years. I would love to get fired, I'm not gonna lie. Because there's zero chance I'm gonna be working the next six or seven years, zero."

Charles Barkley's reaction to the backlash

This comment came just after Barkley's attention-grabbing comment on Cardi B during her halftime performance. Barkley had said that Cardi B got the wrong initials and that he's pretty sure that it should be 'D's', not 'B's'. Such a comment, which, according to Charles, was a joke, instantly sparked mixed reactions around. Now, speaking about the same, Barkley recently said that he doesn't understand why people just cannot take a joke. He added that he appriciate all the support he has been getting, but he also equally agrees that not everybody will like him or his sense of humour. Barkley's exact words were:

"Come on, man. People can't take a joke? They can kiss my ass. I appreciate all the support I've gotten all these years, but if anybody thinks everybody likes them, they're a fool. So if people don't like me or don't have a sense of humor, they can kiss my ass."

Can ESPN actually fire Charles Barkley?

Barkley has been talking about being fired for quite a long time, and his most recent comment came with the backlash he faced over the jab at Cardi B. To mention, Charles Barkley has been doing his job, just in the perfect way for the show, Inside the NBA, which is a show on TNT. It was the first time the show was broadcast as a studio show, before, during, and after the NBA Finals on ESPN. That means, while Barkley is now appearing on ESPN, he doesn't actually work for the company. And ESPN is just borrowing the show from TNT, which means they have zero control over editorial matters or other ones, as well.

Thus, even if ESPN wanted to, it cannot actually fire Barkley. After retiring as an NBA player in 2000, Barkley joined TNT as a studio analyst for the show, Inside the NBA, and he has been working there for more than two decades now. He is one of the famous sports personalities, and his work has been loved so much that it brought him an Emmy Award for the category of Outstanding Sports Personality Studio Analyst. Reportedly, he has a massive contract of several hundred million dollars with TNT, while his net worth is estimated to be around USD 90 million.
