Meanwhile, the authorities have claimed that the killing was carefully planned. Still, Caleb tried to make it appear as if an intruder had broken into their home. Before the final sentence was announced, Caleb became emotional in court. He began to insist that he was innocent. However, the court eventually sided with the prosecution, who presented adequate evidence.

According to the prosecutors, Caleb wanted to end his marriage so that he could continue his secret relationship with another woman. Investigators also found out that he was involved in an affair with Alleigha Botner, a 24-year-old worship leader. She is connected to his church.

In turn, the prosecutors presented thousands of text messages exchanged between Caleb and Alleigha. Some of these messages allegedly showed their discussions about wanting Ashley out of the picture. In fact, one text sent to his mistress shortly before the murder reportedly read, "I choose you. I'm free. Actions will come tomorrow."

The prosecution has argued that instead of pursuing a divorce, Caleb decided to end her life. They also claimed that Ashley had reportedly found out about the affair months earlier after she saw the messages during their 15th wedding anniversary trip. Notably, the state called multiple witnesses during the trial and gave evidence that contradicted Caleb's claim that a burglar committed the crime.
