Britt McHenry is breaking her silence on the viral NBA game confrontation that cost her a job at the US State Department. The former ESPN reporter, who reportedly had just been promoted earlier in the day, on October 21, 2026, says she was sticking up for herself and supermodel Winnie Harlow after hecklers allegedly made snide comments at them.

McHenry says she attended the Washington Wizards vs. Milwaukee Bucks game at Capital One Arena in Washington, DC, with her close friend Andrew. She alleges that a man sitting in front of them began insulting Bucks star Kyle Kuzma's fiancée, Winnie Harlow, "yelling horrible things at Kyle" about the model. Britt shares:

"Kyle Kuzma used to play for the Wizards; he now plays for the Bucks, who they were playing. It was egregiously loud and, quite frankly, not the type of behavior I have seen in the multitude of games I have covered as a journalist or been there as a fan. And he’s saying things like, 'Kuzma, you suck because your girl’s hideous.'"

According to the former sports journalist, the unidentified spectator targeted Harlow’s appearance and made disparaging comments about her vitiligo, a skin condition that causes patches of skin to lose pigmentation. He allegedly "made comments about her skin condition, said it was like Michael Jackson, said just vile things about her."

McHenry said the remarks were particularly upsetting because Harlow is someone she admires. She now admits her sarcastic tone might not have been the best decision. Britt shared, "I then make a snarky comment. Probably shouldn’t have, but everyone behind me laughed, and just said, Oh, I’m sure your girlfriend’s really beautiful, right"

The former ESPN reporter alleged that it was when another man sitting in the same row turned toward her and said, "Why don’t you shut the fu*k up, you dumb b**ch?" She recalled responding, "I wasn’t even talking to you. Who are you?" And that’s where it escalates.

McHenry said she and Andrew initially left their seats after the confrontation, and an arena employee offered to move them. However, she reconsidered because her friend, who is a "huge Wizards fan," had paid around USD 250 to USD 300 for the tickets, and they should have to give up their seats. She admitted, "In hindsight, I wish we would’ve left."

After returning to their seats, McHenry alleged that the men began throwing drinks and other items at her, her friend, and the employee who had tried to help them. The hecklers allegedly made a disturbing remark about her being gang-r**ed outside the arena. Britt shared:

"The main agitator says something truly vile to me about what should be done to me, allegedly about getting gang ra**ed outside. And that is when I threw the rest of my beer in that direction, turned around, and said, 'Drew, let’s get out of here.'"

Even when they got up to leave, McHenry claims the group of "hecklers" continued throwing drinks and other items as they walked away. She added that the main agitator was eventually removed from the arena after the incident. Apologizing for her actions to President Trump, Britt said:

"Once I turned, all of those guys started just pelting us with towels that were given before the game, their drinks. Poor Donald got hit. I’m sorry, Donald."

Britt McHenry says her NBA outburst was about defending Winnie Harlow

In her video, McHenry stood by her decision to speak up, insisting that her reaction was prompted by the alleged comments about Harlow, 32, and the hostility directed toward her, a woman whom she deeply admired. Harlow is one of the biggest faces in modeling representing people with vitiligo, a condition that's often misunderstood, pointed at, and mocked due to skin discoloration.

For Britt McHenry, seeing someone she loved get harassed made her speak up against the alleged bullies. She said, "I was sticking up for Winnie Harlow, a woman that I admire and many women and young girls look up to, and I was sticking up for myself."

The confrontation drew widespread attention and also had professional consequences. According to reports published after the October 21 game, McHenry was forced to resign from her position as a US State Department press adviser covering Europe and Africa. She had reportedly been promoted on the day of the confrontation.
