In an interview with India Today, Judicial member NP Kaushik said:

“The woman bore the embarrassment of wearing a short lehenga at the time of wedding. The couple’s grievance aggravated when the store representative added prominent joint to increase the length and which made it look awkward and despite this, the complainant was asked to pay alteration charges.”

Just like all the brides, she also went for the trial at the studio days before her wedding. Her lehenga was short and the end was not uniformly round. The store people assured her with all the alterations and rectifications required. When her bridal wear arrived, she assumed it to be perfect with all the alterations done and didn’t try it. But on the day of her wedding, she had to wear the lehenga and bear the embarrassment.

Post wedding when she went to the store to get it corrected, the manager kept her lehenga and made excuses of not being able to work on it because of insufficient staff and workload.

On the name of altering the length, they put a visible joint to the dress and made it unwearable. That was her saturation point when she lost her patience and complained about it. And instead of apologising for their goof-up, the staff abused and misbehaved with her.

The court expressed their distress on the time spent on such a petty litigation and it took eight years to take a decision. But justice was served. The bride got the compensation and the trial resulted in getting the bridal studio from Chandni Chowk pay her the cost of lehenga, i.e. Rs. 64,000. The Delhi State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission directed the studio to also indemnify Rs. 50,000 to the woman as compensation for harassment and humiliation faced. The studio will also have to pay Rs. 5 lakh towards consumer welfare fund of the state as the punitive damages in respect for those who may have gone through something similar and are not identifiable.

Girls always dream of being in the limelight on her wedding, but not even in a nightmare she would think of such glitch on her D-day. We hope no bride ever faces this kind of embarrassment!
