Brenda Fricker had a long battle with depression

Before her death, Brenda Fricker had always been open about the struggles she had with her mental health. During an interview on The Tommy Tiernan Show, she revealed that she had suffered from depression for nearly 50 years. This had led her to try to take her life 32 times. She said:

“Just yesterday, I visited the doctor who said, ‘We’re going to put you on stronger antidepressants.’ I'm somewhat of a recluse. Choosing to stay indoors is one thing, but being told to do so makes me want to go outside.”

Brenda credited one of the doctors of St. Patrick's Hospital, Dublin, for essentially saving her life at the time. She claimed that he had pulled her “out of the depths” and that he had an incredible mind. She revealed that she always felt happy and good after seeing him, as he understood her.

During the same interview, Brenda had opened up about her life, even after her success with Home Alone 2 and her Oscar win for her role in the Daniel Lewis drama My Left Foot. Shockingly, she claimed she was completely broke. She had lived off her savings until they ran out, and since then she had chosen to live a quiet life under the radar. She was quoted as saying:

“I lived off my savings while they lasted, but now I’m completely broke. But as long as I have a roof over my head and feed the dog and feed myself, I’m perfectly content. I live a very quiet life well under the radar, and I drive a tiny car, own a cottage, that's about it. Talking to the wall quite a bit, talking to the dog, writing poetry, reading books, watching television. Nothing different than anybody else does, except being alone so much can make you talk to the wall a bit more than most people.”

Having struggled with depression for 50 years, Brenda had said in another interview that she used to go to a therapist once a week, “purely to have a conversation and to hear another human voice.” She also revealed that the reason she attempted suicide so many times was because “you get so bloody tired of nobody listening to you.”

Her interview with Tommy Tiernan a few years ago was the best I've seen. She opened up on her struggles with depression and her reclusive lifestyle. Well worth a watch. RIP Brenda."

Another user wrote, "Rest in peace. I had no idea she was in Home Alone 2 until u/its_brew posted the picture. Man, it'll be sad to see her in the movie now, but, just a guess, maybe she would want us to smile. All the best to her loved ones."
