Blake Fielder-Civil responds to Amy Winehouse's death claims, challenges public narrative

Blake Fielder-Civil spoke on the March 17, 2026, episode of the We Need to Talk podcast, where he directly addressed the long-standing public opinion about him. He said many people still believe he is fully responsible for Amy Winehouse’s death because of how their relationship was shown in the media years ago. Blake was quoted as saying:

“My stance now is that I know a lot of people, especially people reading media 20 years ago, would have an idea that Amy’s passing is my responsibility, as I’ve always said, I never shirk from any responsibility. If I’ve done something, I’ll put my hand up to it. I never blamed a person that gave me drugs for the first time, I never understood, do these people think that I forced Amy to do drugs? That’s just not what happened.”

He admitted that he was there the first time Amy used a substance. But he also explained that she had already started using other drugs before that, with someone else. Blake also spoke about Amy’s personality. He added that she was strong and made her own choices.

Amy Winehouse died in 2011 at the age of 27. According to the official coroner’s report, her death was caused by accidental alco*ol poisoning. The report also confirmed that there were no illegal drugs found in her system at that time. Blake also spoke about how he still feels connected to her and how he believes she would not want him to take all the blame. Blake claimed that he would never speak badly about Amy, but believes she wouldn’t want him taking all the blame 20 years later, saying she would urge him to tell the truth.

Looking back, he described their relationship in a very personal way, saying their struggles with addiction were not what defined them, but rather a small part of a much deeper and more meaningful bond they shared. He stated:

“We were just young addicts at the time. We weren’t to start with, then we were, and it could happen to anyone, Oour love had nothing to do with addiction and addiction had nothing to do with our love.”

His latest statements show a mix of acceptance and defence. He is not denying the past, but he is also asking people to see the full picture instead of placing all the blame on him alone.
