Apart from her professional side, the actress’ personal life has also gained a lot of attention. Her alleged affair with comedian, Mehmood was once the talk of the town. In a recent interview, Aruna Irani opened up about her past relationship with the comedian at the time, when he was already married.
In a recent interview with Zoom, Aruna Irani opened up about her past relationship with comedian, Mehmood. She credited the actor for giving her the opportunity to work in films. She shared that their relationship formed under a sense of obligation. She mentioned that their relationship dynamics changed when their professional paths diverged. She highlighted that after their professional paths diverged, she felt that the comedian was 'openly exploiting' her. She clarified that whatever happened between them, she doesn’t want to put the entire blame on Mehmood, as she too supported it. She was quoted as saying:
"Mehmood ji gave me work for the first time. That relationship was formed under a sense of obligation, and that's how it happened. Later, Mehmood ji moved on to other projects, and I went on to different shows. That's when I started feeling that he was openly exploiting me. I did what I did out of compulsion and necessity, so I won't accuse him alone. I supported it too. Eventually, the relationship ended."
In the same interview, Aruna Irani addressed the long-standing speculation surrounding her marriage to Mehmood. She shared that Mehmood told her that he would marry, but he didn’t. Later, the marriage rumours severely impacted her acting career. She mentioned that filmmakers stopped offering her work as they feared that if she got pregnant, their film would get stuck. Aruna added that things changed when the rumours were put to rest. She was quoted as saying:
"He said he would marry me, but he didn't. In hindsight, it was good for me. He was already married twice and could have married a third time as well, but I believe my destiny was kind. What happened was wrong. He used to tell people that he had married me. Because of that, filmmakers stopped offering me work. They feared that if I got pregnant, their film would get stuck. It was a huge setback for me. When the story ended and I started working independently, people realised there was nothing between us."
Earlier, in an interview with Lehren Retro, Aruna shared that dance director, Suresh Bhatt, told her to impress comedian, Mehmood to get work. Eventually, she developed a soft corner for the comedian. She mentioned that through Mehmood, she saw money, fame and could establish her foothold in the industry. Aruna added that she did cross her limits to impress him. However, Mehmood’s wife objected to working with the actress, and thus the duo stopped working. She was quoted as saying:
"Dance director Suresh Bhatt told me, 'tu Mehmood ko ghaas dal, only he can get you work.' But there also, I kept saying yes and no to Mehmood. Still, he started giving me work even on that basis, and slowly, I developed a soft corner for him. Through him, I saw money, fame, name, and I thought, 'Mein kab tak iss aadmi ko bewkoof banaugi.' I crossed my limits to please him. I came from a very poor family, and that was the first time I had seen name, fame, and money."
