Add BollywoodShaadis on GoogleAnne Hathaway is hogging the spotlight for her back-to-back movie releases. Despite being heavily pregnant, the actress shows no signs of stopping. Most recently, Anne was seen in The Devil Wears Prada 2 and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. While her roles in these movies generated significant buzz, fans are the most excited to see Anne going back to Genovia for the third time in The Princess Diaries 3.
For those who haven't heard the news yet, Anne Hathaway is all set to reprise her role as ‘Mia Thermopolis’ in The Princess Diaries 3. What makes Anne’s return to the franchise so noteworthy is that the upcoming film will come over two decades after viewers watched the actress as an awkward teenager whose world turned upside down after she found out that she was the heir to the throne.
Anne is watching the excitement surrounding the movie build without giving away what fans can expect from the third movie. However, while speaking with PEOPLE, she did reveal there is a meaningful connection between her real-life self and the princess that Anne is returning to play. She said:
“Well, I can't answer that without giving away some of the plot points we’re taking, but I’d say that Mia and I probably have very similar values.”
It was in 2001 when Anne first stepped into the shoes of ‘Mia,’ an ordinary, socially awkward teenager from San Francisco. When she learns that she is actually a princess, her grandmother, ‘Queen Clarisse Renaldi’ (Julie Andrews), helps her grow into her royal role. In the process, we also see her navigating school, friendship, and romance while being in the spotlight.
By the time Anne Hathaway reprises her role in The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, she is shown as a young woman who has managed to come out of her socially awkward phase to take the throne for herself. Now that the actress will once again return to the character on the occasion of the first film’s 25th anniversary, Anne revealed that she can see some of her own growth in ‘Mia’s’ upcoming chapter. Speaking about their shared values, she said:
“I think that we want to see a world that’s full of equality and full of love. I think she wants love, and I want her to have love.”
As one can expect, stepping back into the Princess Diaries universe is way more than a trip down memory lane for Anne Hathaway. The original film, which was directed by the late Harry Marshall, played a significant part in the actress' career, and Anne has not forgotten that herself.
At the recent Disney Legends ceremony at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, which took place on August 16, 2026, Anne opened up about how much the franchise meant to her as well as the fans who grew up alongside her character. She said, “Throughout these films, we have grown up together. And I'm always so amazed at how deeply people have held these stories and these characters in their hearts.”
Referring to her iconic quote in the film, “Me, a princess, beg your pardon. Shut up,” Anne confessed that she has come to love being told to shut up. She also revealed during the event that the team is currently working hard to make sure that The Princess Diaries 3 lives up to everyone's expectations. In her words:
“Being a part of the Disney family also means being a part of a legacy studio that deeply values the family audiences it creates for. It’s why being here today means so much. It’s why we are working so hard to get Princess Diaries 3 right.”
