Amitabh Bachchan Reacted To Reports Of Living With Rekha, 'How Many Times Have You Seen Us Together'

Amitabh Bachchan addressed his affair rumours with Rekha and demanded 'unchallenged proof' about it.

The alleged love story of Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha still rules the headlines. For the unversed, it was three years after his wedding when Amitabh’s name was linked to the vivacious Rekha, and since then, the name has been attached to him. Though Rekha has often given hints about the rumours, making the story believable, but Amitabh has always kept mum. But there was a time when Mr. Bachchan gave a fierce response to the speculations.

Amitabh Bachchan reacted to reports of his affair with Rekha

In 1999, during an interaction with Bhawana Somaaya for her book Amitabh Bachchan: The Legend, the actor spoke about his personal life and linkup rumours. When he was asked about being linked to Rekha, the actor stated that he preferred to stay quite as he wants the media to present an ‘unchallenged proof’ of the rumours.

The veteran star stated that the media had been linking him with Rekha for years and he preferred to stay quite on the topic unless he gets a proof of the same. Elaborating on the same, he said:

“If there are instances of my demeanour with the concerned lady which have been publicly seen and were offensive, let them be brought to my notice, with specific and unchallenged proof, and I shall deal with it. But don’t throw unmitigated accusations just to make good copy and expect me to retaliate, so you can make even better copy. Let’s not go very far. How many times have you seen us together, let alone behave offensively in public?"

In the same interaction, Amitabh also addressed another rumour pertaining him and Rekha, in which reports surfaced that the two had allegedly moved in together. The superstar questioned the media for misleading his fans and said:

"Recently, a prominent film magazine insinuated that I have moved in with the concerned lady in my other home, Pratiksha. Gullible readers view such stories accompanied with photographs of my bungalow as concrete proof. The outcome is damaging and misleading.”

Why did Amitabh Bachchan stop working with Rekha?

Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha are among Hindi cinema’s most memorable on-screen pairs. They have worked together in several films which includes Do Anjaane, Alaap, Khoon Pasina, Ganga Ki Saugandh, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Mr Natwarlal, Suhaag, Ram Balram and Silsila. It was on the sets of Do Anjaane (1976), when the rumours of Amitabh and Rekha’s affair began. He was already married to Jaya Bachchan at that time and the linkup rumours raised many eyebrows.

Once, in a throwback interview with Stardust, Rekha recalled an incident when she saw Jaya crying while watching the love scenes between Amitabh and Rekha in the film, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar. After a week of the trial show, Rekha was told by her friends in the industry that Amitabh would no longer work with her.

When she asked Mr Bachchan about the same, he refused to comment. In an explosive throwback interview with Filmfare in 1984, Rekha reacted to Amitabh Bachchan’s denial of their relationship. Rekha revealed that Mr Bachchan is old-fashioned and would not do anything to hurt the sentiments of his wife, Jaya Bachchan.
