Netflix is scheduled to bring a long list of original films this year. While a few movies are out now in theatres, Netflix has brought Accused, a thriller set in a different background. Featuring Konkona Sen Sharma and Pratibha Ranta in the lead roles, the new movie addressed the matter of s*xual misconduct, except that the viewers are not aware of whether the accused is guilty or innocent. With a short runtime, Accused ensures to bring an experience where viewers would not prefer to take a break.

Movies based on s*xual misconduct have been common over the years. Many crime TV shows have also focused on real-life cases, with criminals being punished in the end. With Accused based on the same matter, keep reading to know if the movie deserves to be watched for once.

Accused will hold your attention due to the script and direction

Accused focuses on the life of 'Dr. Geetika' (Konkona Sen Sharma), who is married to 'Dr. Meera' (Pratibha Ranta). Things are going fine in their lives until 'Dr. Geetika' is labelled as a s*xual offender through multiple emails, forcing her to go on leave. While a former journalist enters to resolve the matter, the allegations start impacting 'Dr. Geetika' and 'Dr. Meera’s' marriage. As mentioned, the story is old. But the treatment and presentation are completely new. It is a straightforward premise, where the makers don’t waste time in unnecessary conversations, and the focus remains only on the case.

Accused jumps straight into the allegations in just ten minutes at the beginning of the film after letting viewers know about the lead character’s personal life. Things change here as the lead slowly starts facing the consequences. The direction by Anubhuti Kashyap also works up to a great extent as she manages to bring out different shades of the characters. Moreover, the script does not fail to address the situation where anyone is easily described as an accused before the court finds out the truth and delivers its verdict.

Accused has a predictable tone despite maintaining the suspense until the end

Movies and TV shows based on s*xual misconduct and other criminal cases have always followed a familiar format. The victim accuses an anonymous individual. But irrespective of the accused’s looks or behavior, viewers are aware of the fact that he or she is innocent. Accused follows the same pattern, where anyone can easily guess that Konkona Sen Sharma is not guilty. However, viewers will play a guessing game when it comes to revealing the culprit who has committed the crime.

It is because of the screenplay that people will be able to ignore the predictability of the storyline. The script has everything that you need in such movies to ensure that you don’t pay attention to other things. Despite having a strong script, the director could have maintained the same tone for the final few minutes of the movie. While it starts as a psychological thriller, it turns preachy when the movie approaches its climax.

Konkona Sen Sharma and Pratibha Ranta give their best performances on screen

Accused could not have found better leads than Konkona Sen Sharma and Pratibha Ranta. The former successfully portrays her emotions on screen, specifically when the allegations against her are revealed. Certain shades of Konkona’s character might make the viewers feel that she might be guilty. Pratibha Ranta also impresses, as she does not take away the limelight from Konkona.

While the second half starts focusing on 'Dr. Geetika' and 'Dr. Meera’s' marriage, the sequences stand out due to Pratibha’s performance, who is confused about whether she should support her wife or stay away from the matter. Since the movie is all about the person accused of s*xual misconduct and its impact on her personal life, the other characters don’t get a chance to bring something unique on screen. However, Aditya Nanda gets some scope to be noticed as 'Dr. Meera’s' colleague, 'Angad.'
