It was needed for his role in the film Thugs of Hindostan, wherein he played the role of a conman, 'Firangi Mallah'.While it was said that the pierced look of the actor was for his role, the inspiration behind the same was reportedly personal for the actor, as shared by a DNA report.
If the reports are to be believed, during his school days he had a friend who had relocated from Sindh and used to wear a nosepin. So, when Aamir learned he would have to pierce his nose for the film, he approached that friend; however, since the friend didn't remember the design of the nosepin, Aamir designed it himself. Sources revealed:
"Aamir has an eye for minute details. Not only does he have a vision for his characters, but he also takes every bit of efforts to get the finer details right. It is a lesser known fact, but he observes his near and dear ones very closely and often draws inspiration from them for his onscreen characters. To play a 'thug,' he imprinted the design of the nose-pin his school friend wore decades ago."

People have been asking whether wearing women's jewels is any sort of wedding tradition, wondering whether the actor had chosen to do the same during his last two weddings as well.
