A young Navy sailor allegedly trying to take his life after facing mental health issues has sparked widespread reaction. As reports surfaced that he was facing disciplinary action, his wife shared her honest feelings about it. She cited court records and told media outlet MS NOW that she thinks it was unfair towards her husband. She slammed the Navy disciplinary system, saying that they should have focused on providing help to her husband, who was dealing with mental health issues, rather than trying to prove him a liar.

For context, the sailor is facing charges of violating Article 83 for "malingering," which states that a service member intentionally fakes an illness or hurts themselves to avoid work, duty, or service. Additionally, he also allegedly violated Article 86, which states that a service member failed to be at their required place of duty without proper authority. The 19-year-old sailor's wife, who is also reportedly his age, called the Navy authorities "insane" for taking action against him. In her words:

"I think they're insane for doing this to people who need mental help...Instead of giving them help, this is just another huge stressor."

Previously, the heartbroken spouse of the sailor also alleged that the authorities were trying to cover up the incident. The reason why she felt that way was because they informed her of her husband's alleged suicide attempt four days after the incident took place. According to her, they handled the situation "very poorly" and left her confused as to why they waited so long to tell her about something so serious involving her husband. She told MS Now:

The sailor's wife further stated that she learned about the incident from one of her husband's friends who sent her a message. The 19-year-old couple is also parents to two children, which makes the situation even more tragic.

The Navy sailor's mental health issues allegedly stemmed from challenging conditions aboard USS Abraham Lincoln

The 19-year-old sailor's wife described his alleged suicide attempt as a decision taken out of desperation. According to her, he was not in a good place due to a combination of grueling deployment conditions, personal stressors, and a perceived lack of mental health support. The USS Abraham Lincoln departed San Diego in November 2025 and was scheduled to return in May 2026. However, due to the outbreak of the war in Iran, its deployment was repeatedly extended.

The ship spent around 270 days at sea with just two days in port. It was a modern record for the longest consecutive days at sea without regular docking. The situation severely affected the crew's mental well-being, and they reportedly felt isolated. At that time, the 19-year-old sailor allegedly repeatedly requested leave to see his young kids, but was rejected. Finally, the dejected sailor decided to take the drastic step of jumping off the vessel.
