Captain Vikram Batra is a name that has not been forgotten ever in the history of India. He made his highest sacrifice saving his motherland at the Kargil War. Recently, the memories of his supreme contribution and sacrifices were revoked for the people to get inspired from, with the release of the 2021 film, Shershaah, starring Sidharth Malhotra in the titular role. The film not only did capture the realistic moments endured by the brave soldier on the battle field, but also portrayed a segment of his personal life with his fiance, Dimple Cheema, portrayed by Kiara Advani. And now, Vikram Batra’s twin brother, Vishal Batra opened up on some fond anecdotes about both the real and reel-life jodi of Vikram and Dimple.
During the shooting process of the film, Shershaah, the filmmaker and producers got a lot of support and information from Captain Vikram Batra’s real family members, including his parents, sisters and his twin brother, Vishal Batra. As a result of the same, Vishal ended up forming a great bonding with the lead actors of the film, Sidharth and Kiara, who also invited him to their wedding in February 2023. And in a recent interview with Barkha Dutt, Vishal Batra recalled attending the celeb couple’s wedding. He mentioned:
“When I attended their wedding, I couldn’t help but think of how I could have been at Vikram’s wedding. For maybe two minutes, I wished it was his wedding. I wished it was Dimple there so that her dream of marrying the boy she loved got fulfilled. But, if not the real Vikram’s, then at least the reel Vikram’s. I was very happy for them as they make a lovely couple. To me, the real love of Vikram and Dimple that didn’t happen because of destiny happened in real life.”

Continuing in the same interview, Vishal spoke about being able to sense the time when sparks began flying between Sidharth and Kiara. He revealed that the duo came closer during their shooting time in Palampur. He also recalled the moment when Sid and Kiara visited his parents and took their blessings jointly. In his words:
“Sidharth is a very lovely, honest, and soft-hearted guy. It was on December 24, 2016, that my dad and I met Sidharth for the first time. I am really happy looking back at the marriage of those two people. To us, their love story began during the movie shoot. I apologise if I am wrong, but I think this story began when they were shooting in Palampur. I used to meet Kiara and Sidharth often. They once came to our place in Palampur and sought the blessings of our mom and dad. At that time, I sensed ‘love is in the air’ between them. When I looked into their eyes, I could see the chemistry developing.”
Captain Vikram Batra’s real life love story turned all the more inspirational when after his demise, his ladylove-turned-fiance, Dimple Cheema chose to live a single life in memories of him, and never got married to anyone else. She chose to live a secluded, peaceful life committed to the service of the society, and has been a school teacher ever since. Vishal Batra, in the same interview, spoke about Dimple’s decision to never get married. He said:
“She works as a teacher. Whenever I meet her, I remind her that life’s long, and I ask her to get married. Maybe she wants to hold on to the memories of Vikram. She’s happy. She has joined a few government clubs and enjoys traveling around with the members of those clubs.”

While people all over India remember and salute him on this day, it becomes a painful memory for his bereaved family, who mourn his loss every single day of their lives. On July 7, 2022, Vikram’s twin brother, Vishal Batra had taken to his IG handle and dropped a picture of the late brave heart and his dearest twin brother. He penned an emotional note, and revealed how in the past 23 years, nobody in the family has ever forgotten speaking about him.
