The flamboyant former captain of the Indian cricket team, Mohammad Azharuddin and 1980 Miss India title holder, Sangeeta Bijlani's love story was once a leading topic among the gossipmongers. However, when Azhar met Sangeeta for the first time, he was already married to his first wife, Naureen and had two sons, Asaduddin and Ayazuddin with her. But due to Azhar and Sangeeta's affair, he divorced Naureen and married the actress. But the cricketer and actress' marriage was also short-lived.
Bollywood and cricket love stories are no new in India. The cricketers have often fallen for Bollywood beauties, and Mohammad Azharuddin and Sangeeta Bijlani's love story was another example. In 1985, during an ad shoot, Azharuddin met Sangeeta for the first time. And it was love at first sight for him. During a candid conversation at the India Today Mind Rocks event in Bhubaneshwar, the cricketer confessed the same and mentioned that such cricket and Bollywood relationship eras would continue as "ye to dil ki baat hai". He also mentioned that when two stars marry, it becomes easier to deal with one another, and the understanding between them becomes more accessible.

Soon after their first meeting, Sangeeta and Azhar started dating each other. And not after a very long period of courtship, they decided to take their relationship to the next phase. Finally, on November 14, 1996, Sangeeta tied the knot with Azharuddin at the Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai. They spent 14 years of marital bliss and were one of the most favourite couples in the industry then.
However, Sangeeta and Azharuddin's marriage hit rock button after 14 years of togetherness, and multiple reports started surfacing in the media claiming his extra-marital affair. Moreover, reports claimed a growing closeness between Azhar and Indian Badminton player, Jwala Gutta. This not only became the talk of the town but also led to the separation between Sangeeta and Azharuddin. And in 2010, the cricketer and the actress decided to call it quits, which shocked their fans. In April 2021, it was also reported that Jwala tied the knot with the love of her life, Vishnu Vishal.

Soon after Azharuddin and Jwala's dating reports surfaced on the internet, both the cricketer and the badminton player strongly reacted. They not only dismissed their dating rumours but also called them baseless. In a conversation with Hindustan Times, the cricketer was quoted as saying, “I’ve known Jwala for many years. She’s a friend and will always be. These are planted stories and motivated by people, who are against me in the Badminton Association of India. They are so upsetting.” On the other hand, Jwala, in an interview with the TOI, said:
“I am disgusted by the reports. I know they are being spread by people from the badminton association because I am not on good terms with them.”
