Dimple Kapadia, an institution of talent needs no introduction. She was just 14, when she gave a screen test for Raj Kapoor’s film, Bobby. The film’s success had made Dimple an overnight star, for which she won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress. With the release of Bobby, Dimple had become a huge sensation. With the miniskirts, midriff-baring polka dots and the famous red swimsuit, Dimple had become the youth fashion icon. Six months before the release of her debut film, Bobby, Dimple Kapadia had married the superstar of Indian cinema, Rajesh Khanna in 1973. Together they weaved a paradise with their two daughters, Twinkle Khanna and Rinke Khanna.
In April 1982, Dimple Kapadia and Rajesh Khanna got separated and she returned to acting after two years of her separation. Even after parting ways with Rajesh, Dimple carried immense respect for him throughout her life. She had even campaigned for him during his political career in the 90s.
Dimple had once stated that marriage with Rajesh was a wrong decision but the actress had never talked ill about him. In a 2017 article Dimple was quoted as saying, “Kaka (Rajesh Khanna) has been consistently misunderstood. He’s a wonderful guy. I was far too young and impetuous when we married. We may have separated, but I still have tremendous regard and love for him. So don’t you dare try to extract any nasty statements from me. Kaka’s superstardom had to be experienced to be believed.”
When Bollywood’s superstar, Rajesh Khanna had met Dimple for the first time, he was completely smitten by her charm. Without wasting any time, Rajesh had proposed Dimple for marriage. And being a huge fan of Kaka, she didn’t think twice before accepting his proposal. Dimple was just 16, when she had gotten married to Rajesh, who was 15 years elder to her. Dimple quit acting after her marriage at Rajesh’s request.

After a few years of his marriage to Dimple, Rajesh Khanna’s stardom had started fading away as his movies were not doing that well in the 70s and 80s. As a result, the superstar couldn’t handle the failure and it had affected his relationship with Dimple.
Besides many attempts, Dimple couldn’t mend her failing marriage and as a result, she had left him in 1984 and had later admitted that marrying a superstar was a wrong decision. In an interview with India Today, she had stated, “The life and happiness in our house came to an end the day I and Rajesh got married.” Rajesh Khanna had madly loved his daughters, Twinkle Khanna and Rinke Khanna and they were the only reason why he had never divorced Dimple Kapadia.
