One such actor, whose relationship has always garnered a lot of media attention is Salman Khan. All his fans have one question in their minds and i.e., "When will he get married?” From dating Sangeeta Bijlani, Aishwarya Rai, Katrina Kaif and a couple of flings here and there, Salman’s love life has always been in the news. But his affair with actress, Somy Ali was one of the most talked-about. (Also Read: Mira Rajput Kapoor Reveals No One Could Beat Her Mom, Bela Rajput In Making This Dish [See Picture])
Born in Karachi, Pakistan, Somy Ali had a teenage crush on actor Salman Khan. Inspired by Salman, Somy had convinced her parents to allow her to move to India. She had appeared in ten Hindi films from 1991 to 1998 as a lead heroine. Somy was in a relationship with Salman for eight years. After a brief stint in Bollywood, in 1999, Somy went to Florida to live with her mother. In 2011, Somy was honoured with the American Heritage Award for her work for women’s rights.
In an interview with The Times Of India, Somy Ali talked about her stint in Bollywood. She also revealed that the only reason she had come to India was to marry Salman Khan. Revealing how she convinced her parents, Somy said, “It was 1991 and I was 16. I saw Maine Pyar Kiya, and I went, ‘I have to marry this guy!’ I told my mom that I am going to India tomorrow. She, of course, sent me off to my room, but I kept pleading that I have to go to India and marry this guy — Salman Khan. I had a dream that I have to go marry Salman because he is going to be my saviour. Since she wouldn’t relent, I called my dad. Of course, I didn’t tell him why I wanted to visit India.”
Somy also recalled how she convinced her father and told him that she wanted to meet her relatives in Mumbai. In her words, “I told him that we have relatives in Mumbai and I wanted to meet them. I also told him that my biggest dream is to see the Taj Mahal, which I must admit, I haven’t seen to this day (laughs!). I was born in Pakistan and had lived there for a few years before I move to Miami, so I spent a week there, and then landed in India and checked into a five-star hotel. People used to make fun of me because I was this “struggling actor”, who was staying at a plush hotel.” (Also Read: Smriti Khanna Wishes Brother-In-Law, Gaurav Gupta With A Cute Picture Playing With Baby Anayka)
Somy further talked about her brief stint in Bollywood and said, “I was every director’s nightmare and refused to go for rehearsals. I was different from others. I was too Americanised and too much of a tomboy. I was such a misfit in the film industry. I had no interest in pursuing a film career, and my only goal, which sounds preposterous at this age, was that I have to marry Salman.”
Somy admitted of being too naive to come to India at the mere age of 16, without even completing her education. She opened up about being misguided due to which she had ruined some relationships but is glad to have made friends in the industry. Somy, who is a social activist, also admitted of being a victim of domestic and sexual violence. She is now the founder of No More Tears USA and works for the upliftment of women's rights.
