Together Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu have witnessed the toughest times and stood with each other like a rock. When Dilip ji had fallen sick, Saira ji held his hands and never left it once. But not many know that on the engagement day, Dilip ji had left Saira ji at the alter because his ex-girlfriend had taken sleeping pills.
Recently, in an interview with The Times Of India, Saira ji shared the details of that day. The veteran actress said, "The day we got engaged, one girl- not from the industry- who was supposedly his girlfriend and had been almost up to the altar with him, took sleeping pills. Dilip saab had to rush to her and make her understand that he's in love with me. He pacified her and came back to the engagement ceremony. I got sort of used to such things. There were girls who would stand in front of his car and wish that the car runs over them."
Saira ji also talked about Dilip saab's deteriorating health. She said, "He's not too well. He's weak. At times, he walks into the hall and back to his room. His immunity is low. Pray for his welfare. We are grateful to God for each day. It is out of love and not duress that I look after Dilip saab. I am not looking for praises to be called a devoted wife. Just to touch him and cuddle him is the world's best thing that's happening to me. I adore him and he is my breath itself." Coming back to Saira Banu and Dilip Kumar's love story, it was the former's mother, Naseem Banu, who had played Cupid between the couple. She had introduced them to each other and had tried to bring them together. After falling for each other, Dilip Kumar had proposed her. At the mere age of 22, Saira ji had tied the knot with 44-year-old Dilip ji in 1966. And rest, as we all know, is history!
We remember in a 2010 interview with The Hindu, Saira ji had talked about the two big dreams of her life. She had stated that she had only dreamt of being famous like her mother and marrying the love of her life, Dilip Kumar. And God had fulfilled both her wishes.
