In some communities, relatives apply haldi to the bride and the groom with mango leaves while in some, grass is dipped in haldi paste and oil, and then applied on the bride and the groom's face. In most communities, haldi is applied with just hands. The main idea is just to make sure that the would-be couple has a radiant glow on their faces, which would make them stand out during the wedding.
