Mousuhumi Chatterjee, born on April 26, 1948, is a Bengali and Hindi film actress. She had gained a lot of fame and love for her charm in the 1970s. However, not many know that Moushumi Chatterjee's real name was Indira and she was fondly known as Indu. But it was changed to Moushumi when she had entered the film industry. Moushumi Chatterjee's grandfather was a judge when Indians were ruled by Britishers. Her father, Prantosh Chattopadhyaya was in the army and had later worked for the railways.
Moushumi Chatterjee was just ten years old when she had gotten her first movie, Balika Vadhu. Director, Tarun Mazumdar's house and studio were near to her school, and when he had offered her the film, her father had straight away said a no. However, it was Tarun Mazumdar's wife, Sandhya Roy, who had then convinced her father. She had said that Moushumi Chatterjee was the perfect choice for the film.
Moushumi Chatterjee's father had gotten Rs 1,000-2,000, but her father denied it and stated that they will need it to pamper her. In an interview with Rediff.com, Moushumi Chatterjee had shared that she didn't like shooting for the film as she had to put on a lot of makeup and didn't get the time to play. She had said:
"I was just a child, in the fifth standard, when I did this film. They wanted me to look like a teenager so they would make me wear a tight blouse and sari. I was not comfortable and wore it very reluctantly. Twice, I ran away from the makeup room."

During the shooting of Balika Vadhu, Moushumi Chatterjee had met her future father-in-law, Hemanta Mukhopadhyay, who was professionally known as Hemant Kumar (June 16, 1920—September 26, 1989). He was an Indian Bengali singer and music director. In an interview with Rediff.com, Moushumi had narrated how a rumour had turned her into the bahu of Hemant Kumar. She had said:
"After Balika Badhu, I became very popular. Hemanta Kumar told my father he would take me to Mumbai for Durga Puja, because I can't go out in public in Kolkata. He had his own puja in Mumbai. My father agreed. A magazine wrote a story saying that I had been seen with Hemanta Kumar's family so I may be getting married to his son Jayanta. My father's aunt heard about this and scolded my father: 'How can you send your young unmarried daughter to Hemanta Kumar's house?' Hemanta Kumar entered the house just then and announced, 'Indu will be my daughter-in-law.'"
During a media interaction, Moushumi Chatterjee had revealed that she was quite young when she had gotten married. Moushumi Chatterjee had tied the knot with Jayant Mukherjee in the year 1972. After getting married, Moushumi came to Mumbai with her dog and a dollhouse. When her father-in-law had asked her whether she wanted to continue her studies, she had denied it.
Immediately after Moushumi Chatterjee's engagement, the gorgeousness had signed her next film, Anurag. The actress had once revealed that director, Shakti Samanta had gotten super angry with her. There was a belief that married actress' don't get good roles. Moushumi Chatterjee also had stated that she would sign films, which her father-in-law would approve.

Moushumi Chatterjee and Jayant Mukherjee became proud parents of two adorable girls, Payal Mukherjee and Megha Mukherjee. In 2019, Moushumi Chatterjee's older daughter, Payal Mukherjee had passed away. During a media interaction, Moushumi had revealed how she balances her work and personal life. She had said:
"Sometimes it was too much because I did not have any relatives here other than my father-in-law and my husband. I had shooting household problems. Sometimes the maid was not there. Sometimes the cook was not there. Then I had to handle my career, my husband and then my child. Even years later, I would sometimes wake up panicking in the middle of the night, and my daughter would comfort me and remind me those days are gone. God was there. God gave me more than I deserve."
In Bollywood, linkups and rumours are part and parcel of life, and Moushumi Chatterjee had often been linked to many of her co-stars. In an interview with Rediff.com, the actress had shared that there was a time when she was linked to two of her co-stars. She had said:
"Whatever was printed about me didn't bother me because my family knew how I was, with whom I was and where I was and what I was up to. My father-in-law told me in the beginning never to react; if you react, more such stories will appear. I remember one magazine linked me romantically with Haribhai (Sanjeev Kumar) and a few pages later, with Jeetendra -- in the same issue!"
Moushumi had also revealed that she was linked to Farooque Shaikh as well. She had said:
"Another time, an editor friend said her magazine was going through some problems, so she was carrying a front-page story about Farooque Shaikh and me. When I saw the magazine the next morning, I was shocked. Farooque Shaikh came to my house that evening and asked whether I had read what had been written about us. There was no problem in my house, but I thought there may be some problem at his house. But when he came, he was carrying a copy of the magazine to show his wife Roopa."
Moushumi Chatterjee is still living happily ever after with Jayant Mukherjee. She was a famous actress of her time, but it never became a problem in her married life. In an interview with Rediff.com, Moushumi had said:
"My husband is also from the creative field; he has produced a film, and the television series Talash. I acted in it and Hrishikesh Mukherjee directed it. He sings really well but I don't know why he did not pursue it. He sang at college festivals and got a gold medal. He sang at mandals too. But I think he thought that he doesn't sing like his father. He underestimated himself. My stardom would have come between us if he was born in a poor family. But before I could buy a Mercedes, he was driving one, so there was no complex. I was a wife to him; I was never a celebrity to him."
