Madhuri Dixit Reveals She Was Mercilessly Body-Shamed In The Industry Back In 90s: 'Isko Mota Karo'

In an industry where the battle for the number one position is nothing short of a blood sport, Madhuri Dixit has been magical. With her attractive looks, incredible acting and dance moves, she has carved a niche for herself in Bollywood. From being one of the leading heroines of the 90s to still being relevant to her audience, Madhuri still lives rent-free in many hearts.

However, the Devdas actress’ road to stardom was not easy, and now the diva has opened up about how she was body-shamed in the industry during the initial days. Talking about her personal life, Madhuri Dixit had tied the knot with the love of her life, Dr Shriram Nene and together, they have two kids, Arin Nene and Ryan Nene. After getting married in 1999, Madhuri had even left her career, glitz and glam, to live a private life with her family abroad.

In a recent interview with Bollywood Hungama, Madhuri Dixit was asked what one challenge she had to face when she had entered the film industry that today’s generation of actresses does not have to face anymore. Answering this, Madhuri said she was mercilessly body-shamed and had even heard people saying, ‘Isko thora mota karo’. In her words:

“During my time… they thought I was too skinny to begin with. Yeh heroine, isko thoda mota karo (make this heroine gain weight) they used to say. I don’t think that that’s an issue now.”

Earlier, in an interview with Pinkvilla, Madhuri Dixit had talked about her experience with body shaming during her debut film, Aarodh (1984). She had mentioned that though nobody had said nasty things to her face, they had gossiped behind her back. Madhuri could be quoted as saying:

“Never on my face. At the most, they would say bahot dubli hai, she is very skinny but I overcame that and then Tezaab happened and then it didn’t matter if I was skinny to them, everyone was fine then.”

Madhuri and her hubby, Dr Shriram Nene had met at her brother’s birthday party, when Shriram did not know about Madhuri’s stardom in India. In an old interview with Simi Garewal, the Kalank actress had revealed how frightened she had felt on her first date with Dr Shriram Nene. While talking about that day, the actress had said:

“The first time we met, he said, ‘Let’s go mountain biking.’ I swear I had not sat on a bicycle for the past 20 years. I am like, ‘Okay, let’s go.’ Mom was like, Do you know what it involves?’ And I am like, ‘Yeah, you just sit on a bike and you go.’ Once we went there, that was when I knew what mountain biking is. I came down slopes I never imagined myself doing. I literally was frightened out of my wits. After a while, I had to tell him ‘You know what, I don’t think I have done this.’ He said ‘You are brave’.”
