Lara Dutta Reveals Why Daughter, Saira's Birth Was A 'Blessing In Disguise' For Her

Former Miss Universe and one of the finest Bollywood actresses, Lara Dutta, had tied the knot with 11-time Grand Slam Champion, Mahesh Bhupathi. On February 17, 2011, they had registered their marriage in a civil ceremony, and on February 20, 2011, the couple had exchanged vows at a grand wedding in Goa. The lovebirds had a lavish Victorian-themed formal church wedding and reception at Candolim resort, Goa. On January 20, 2012, Lara Dutta and Mahesh Bhupathi had welcomed their daughter, Saira Bhupati.

Motherhood is a 24*7 thankless job for which you get paid only with smiles, kisses, and lots of giggles. When a woman embraces motherhood, a lot of burden comes on her shoulder. Many women sacrifice their career or their hobbies for their babies.  Ever since Lara had embraced motherhood, she had also taken a break from the world of glamour, we all were eagerly waiting for her to make a comeback. However, Lara is often seen sharing snippets of her life on her Instagram handle.

Lara Dutta had made her debut with Andaz in 2003, and after that, she had appeared in Bollywood films back to back. In an interview with Gulf News, Lara talked about the roles she has always wanted to do and what made her take a long gap in her acting career. She mentioned that the usual roles in Bollywood like ‘husband adoring wife’ or ‘sacrificing mother’ had made her tired, so her daughter, Saira’s birth, was a blessing for her to take a long gap. She said:

"Either you play that long-sacrificing mother or that pati-vrata (husband-adoring wife) lady, but that’s such (expletive)! Pardon my French, but you get so tired of being tasked with such roles … At some point when I entered my 30s, I just got tired of playing the same kind of characters. And so that sabbatical when my daughter was born … was a blessing in disguise."

The former Miss Universe and an excellent actor, Lara Dutta, talked about how portraying the ‘cohort of women' between the ages of 35 and 55 is slowly developing in Bollywood. She explained about her liking towards these ‘age-appropriate roles’ and how she always wanted to portray herself as an actor. She retorted:

“Honestly, age has liberated me. Since I have come into my 40s, I am finally doing age-appropriate roles and I am finally playing the kind of characters that I have always wanted to portray as an actor. You know, I’ve never been somebody who’s come into the industry saying that I want to be the leading lady or that I want to be a hero. I wanted to be an actor and we’re finally getting those kinds of roles being written for us. I honestly believe the cohort of women between the ages of 35 and 55 years was never addressed. Nothing was made on them."

In an interview with Pinkvilla, Lara Dutta had opened up on why she had taken a break from acting. She had shared that motherhood was her first priority, and she wanted to be present during her daughter's early years. The actress had stated:

"When Saira was born, being with her through her early years was my priority. Mahesh and I were clear that between both of us, one parent will always be with Saira full-time. So, my choices of roles became hugely judged on that parameter. It had to be worth leaving Saira and going to work."

In another interview with the PTI, Lara Dutta had opened up on motherhood and had shared:

"You spend many sleepless nights even before the child is born, figuring out whether you'll be a good mother, be able to live up to everything that's expected. But no amount of worry is going to prepare you when the child is born. Each child goes through its own phases as well. At one point in time, they are the best-behaved child, and then they are the opposite. The day you decide to become a parent, you're signing up for one of the greatest adventures of life which doesn't stop ever."
