With the probe of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) into an alleged drug syndicate in the industry, the connection of Bollywood and drugs have come into the spotlight yet again. Writer and lyricist, Javed Akhtar had defended the film industry after Narcotics Control Bureau probe into its alleged connections to drugs trade and consumption. Sometime back, Javed ji had tweeted about Karan Johar’s parties, and had wanted the attention of the media to be diverted to the more important matters. Javed ji had tweeted, “If Karan johar had invited some farmers too for his party life would have been easier for our TV channels. They would not have had to choose between farmers protest and Karan’s party!. it seems that Karan’s do is the second most favourite PARTY of our channels.”
In an interview with Barkha Dutt, Javed Akhtar was asked how he would react if he found his children, Zoya Akhtar and Farhan Akhtar were smoking marijuana. Javed ji answered, “I would tell them not to do it, it’s not right. But they are grown ups. It’s like when I gave up alcohol in 1991, and haven’t taken a sip since then. I used to drink everyday. I have come to the conclusion that if you have any kind of intoxication, it can harm you. Tomorrow if I come to know my daughter smokes marijuana, I’ll tell her she shouldn’t be doing this. If she listens to me that’s fine, but if she doesn’t, she’s a grown up girl. It’s the same with my son.”
Speaking about the ongoing NCB investigation into the alleged Bollywood-drugs nexus, Javed Akhtar shared that he believes the film industry is much more disciplined and responsible than it ever was. He said, “I have never used any drug in my life. Although I was not a very disciplined young man and I used to drink a lot. I don’t believe in those reports but look at their health, their physique, their physical fitness. These boys and girls, unlike the stars of yesteryear who were not obsessed by their physical fitness, which this generation is. In fact, they spend two to three hours in the gym. Do they look like drug addicts? They are extremely professional and responsible people. The screenwriter, Javed Akhtar had met his first wife during the filming for Seeta Aur Geeta in which the young Honey Irani had a supporting role. What had begun as casual acquaintances gradually turned into friendship and Honey was completely smitten by Javed, who had also reciprocated the feelings. Not only do they have the similarity of being multi-talented, but the father-son duo also shares a striking resemblance with each other.
